Out of Right Field: Recap, takeaways from the Seattle Mariners’ 5-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals

Tommy Edman got the winning hit for the second consecutive day as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the host Seattle Mariners 5-4 Thursday afternoon.

Matt Wieters and Dexter Fowler hit home runs for the Cardinals, who took two of three games in the interleague series, and four relievers combined for 5 2/3 scoreless innings.

J.P. Crawford and Tim Beckham homered for the Mariners, who lost for the sixth time in seven games.

Edman’s two-run single in the seventh inning gave the Cardinals their first lead and made a winner of Daniel Ponce de Leon (1-0). Fellow right-hander Carlos Martinez pitched the ninth for his third save.

M’s left-hander Tommy Milone (1-3) went 5 1/3 innings and was charged with all five runs. He allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out four.

The Mariners hit into four double plays.

Beckham’s 14th home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth, gave the Mariners a 4-3 lead.

Of note

The M’s acquired right-hander Matt Wisler from San Diego for cash considerations. Wisler, 26, was designated for assignment by the Padres on Saturday. In 21 relief appearances for San Diego this season, Wisler was 2-2 with a 5.28 ERA. In 29 innings, he struck out 34 strikeouts and walked 10.

Our take from Right Field

The Cardinals’ Andrew Miller showed why he’s still one of the most dominant lefty relievers in the game. With two runners on in the bottom of the eighth, the M’s had the player they wanted in the batter’s box in Daniel Vogelbach, their All-Star representative. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, but Miller was able to strike out Vogelbach on a sweeping slider and also fanned Omar Narvaez to end the inning.

Up next

The M’s will play host to the Oakland Athletics in their final three games before the All-Star break. LHP Yusei Kikuchi (4-5, 5.12 ERA) is scheduled to face A’s lefty Brett Anderson (8-5, 3.92) in the series opener at 7:10 p.m. Friday at T-Mobile Park.
