Out of Right Field: Recap, takeaways from the Seattle Mariners’ 5-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics

Brett Anderson pitched 6 1/3 strong innings as the Oakland Athletics defeated the host Seattle Mariners 5-2 Friday night in the opener of a three-game series.

Anderson (9-5), a left-hander, allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts as the A’s won for the eighth time in their past 10 games.

Anderson outdueled Mariners rookie left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (4-6), who allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out five.

The Mariners lost for the seventh time in their past eight games.

Oakland’s Franklin Barreto and Seattle’s Tom Murphy hit solo home runs.

The A’s scored twice in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. Matt Olson led off with a ground-rule double to right. Khris Davis then lined a single to right field that outfielder Domingo Santana bobbled. That gave Olson the opportunity to score and he slid home safely as the ball bounced over the catcher’s head. That allowed Davis to take second on Santana’s second error on the play. Davis advanced to third on Mark Canha’s groundout to the right side of the infield and scored on Ramon Laureano’s sacrifice fly.

A’s pinch-hitter Robbie Grossman added a two-run double with two outs in the ninth for the final margin.

RHP Matt Wisler, acquired from San Diego on Thursday for cash considerations, reported to the club and RHP Mike Wright was designated for assignment. The M’s have seven days to trade, release or outright Wright’s contract to the minors. Wright is 0-1 with an 8.28 ERA and one save in 19 appearances this season with Baltimore and Seattle. … A’s reliever Liam Hendriks was named to the American League’s roster for next week’s All-Star Game in Cleveland. Hendriks replaces Tampa Bay’s Charlie Morton, who is scheduled to pitch Sunday so he won’t be available for Tuesday’s showcase. .. LHP Justus Sheffield and RHP Logan Gilbert, two of the M’s top prospects, had strong starts Thursday night. Sheffield went seven scoreless innings for Double-A Arkansas, allowing two hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Gilbert, pitching for Single-A Modesto, pitched five scoreless innings, allowing four hits, one walk and striking out seven. Modesto teammate 3B Joe Rizzo went 3 for 5 with two home runs and three RBIs.

Kikuchi put together perhaps his best start of the season, allowing only one hit through the first 5 2/3 innings, but still took the loss.
