A battle for Spokane’s soul

Spokane — known for perseverance, compassion and helping those in need — is at risk of having its legacy smeared. Recently, we have been associated with horrible attention due to an article published in the Guardian exposing an issue that has been brewing in the shadows for quite some time.

Matt Shea, 4th District representative, was caught communicating once again with people associated with white nationalists and anti-government groups. In this communication these people threatened extreme violence against people who oppose them. Matt Shea agreed to run background checks on opposing people not so different than when he stalked his political opponent recording a video in front of her home.

We must take a stand against this activity or identify with these radicals. It’s your choice. Are we to continue being a sought-after enclave for people with extreme views and utopian, or dystopian, fantasies? Let’s not identify with racism and anti-government factions; we will lose what truly makes Spokane a wonderful place to call home.

Right now, as stated by presidential hopeful Joe Biden, “We are in a battle for the soul of our nation.” We need to take a hard look at ours. Before we alter the view and respectability of our region and further distance ourselves from our values, let’s make a better choice. This is not a Republican Issue nor a Democrat Issue. This is an American Issue.
