Letter to editor: Holocaust observance writing, art contests bring out excellence
On April 23, we had the opportunity to read and see in The S-R community news section, Valley Voice, the special accomplishments of two of our area’s outstanding middle school students. Natalie Williams and Garrett Johnson deserve praise, thanks and congratulations for their contributions to the Spokane Community Observance of the Holocaust.
I am grateful that they shared their talents with the community. Natalie’s essay, “Hold Onto the Light,” is the most inspirational piece written by a seventh-grader that I have read.
There was a time before I retired when I taught history to both middle and high school students. Frequently, students would ask me why they should study history. Natalie answered that question with an honest assessment of how her knowledge of history has made her a better person.
Parents, teachers and all who value education must be proud of the accomplishments of Natale and Garrett. I thank them for proving that excellence does exist in our schools.
