Spokane police say scammers are asking residents to donate to families of officers killed on-duty

A suspected phone scam emerged in Spokane this week in the guise of a nonprofit supporting police, according to a Spokane Police Department news release.

A Spokane woman called Crime Check Monday to report an attempted fraud after she got a call from a man asking for donations to a fund benefiting law enforcement and families of fallen law enforcement, the release said.

“Fortunately she is not out any money, only some time,” the release said. “The Spokane Police Department (SPD) will never call you to ask for monetary donations over the phone.”

The man’s voice sounded recorded and asked for the donation either by a mailed envelope or an immediate donation via credit card, the woman said.

She told the caller to send the information to her address and was immediately transferred to a billing department where she was pressured to contribute by credit card.

When she asked again to have the information mailed to her, the caller hung up, according to the release.
