Small brush fire quickly extinguished by firefighters near SFCC

A small “human-caused” brush fire broke out Thursday near Spokane Falls Community College, according to the Spokane Fire Department.

Justin de Ruyter, fire department spokesman, said the blaze was about 100 feet by 50 feet in size on West Elliott Drive and West Whistalks Way near a large apartment area. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which was reported shortly before 2 p.m., de Ruyter said.

Washington State Department of Natural Resources crews also responded.

Spokane police Lt. Terry Preuninger said there was no indication the fire was accidental. No one has been arrested and the investigation is ongoing.

No one was injured.
