EWU men win fifth straight, record season-best scoring output at Sacramento State
The Eastern Washington men’s basketball team set a season high in scoring and continued its late-season surge, extending its winning streak to five games with a 102-94 road victory over Sacramento State on Thursday at Hornet Pavilion.
The Eagles (10-17, 8-6 Big Sky) surpassed the century mark for the first time this season and shot 56.3% from the field, their fourth-best shooting percentage of the year.
Eastern led 57-39 at the half and wasn’t seriously threatened in the second period, hitting its final nine shots to outpace the Hornets (9-17, 5-9), who got hot in the second half and totaled 55 points.
Do-it-all EWU guard Isaiah Moses recorded 26 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Guard Tyler Powell added 17 points and forward Kiree Huie had 12 points and eight boards.
The Eagles shot 14 of 28 on 3-pointers.
Guard Prophet Johnson had 26 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for the Hornets, who shot 54.1% overall.
Women
Sacramento State 69, Eastern Washington 60: The Eagles (12-15, 5-9 Big Sky) sputtered in the first half and their late-season slide continued with a loss to the Hornets (12-15, 6-8) at Reese Court in Cheney.
EWU absorbed its fourth straight loss. Sacramento State snapped a four-game skid.
The Eagles shot 7 of 21 in the first half, committed 10 turnovers and managed just 15 points, falling into a nine-point hole at the half. The Hornets extended the lead to as many as 19 points before an Eastern rally in the fourth quarter cut it to six, but the Eagles couldn’t get closer.
Forward Kourtney Grossman had 20 points and eight rebounds for EWU, and guard Ella Gallatin tallied 19 points, six rebounds and six assists.
EWU finished the game shooting 40.4% after an efficient second half. The Hornets shot 46.2% from the field. Eastern, a top-20 rebounding team nationally, totaled a season-low 26 rebounds.
