Bio: Mathews played first three collegiate seasons at Cal. Santa Monica High standout was named Most Valuable Player of the Ocean League his junior and senior seasons. Ranked No. 24 shooting guard and No. 85 overall in the nation by Rivals.com. Ranked No. 77 on the ESPN Top 100 list and No. 33 at his position. Father Phil was San Francisco's head coach from 1996-2004 and currently coaches at Riverside (Calif.) City College. Younger brother Jonah is a freshman guard at USC. Earned 4.0 GPA fall semester at GU.
Sr. Scouting report: Graduate transfer from Cal has provided experience and perimeter shooting ability. One of the top shooters in the Pac-12 the last three seasons, draining 201 3-pointers and making nearly 42 percent from distance. On watch list for Jerry West Award (top shooting guard). Scored 28 points in Cal's victory over Arizona last season. Had 31 points against Washington as a sophomore and career-best 32 versus Oregon as a freshman. Started 64 games and played in 102 games in three seasons at Cal.
