Daily Briefing

Mostly thick slices, Duncan, police notes, six feet of Snow

Great story about Spokane recycling, folks said, although editor Steve Smith said the man in the accompanying photo looks suspiciously like him. This story also comes with a very detailed chart located here that goes through city-by-city recycling services, and a map.

Glenn Johnson

When news came of Glenn Johnson being hospitalized, should that have been a news item rather than a sports item? One factor was that Johnson is also the mayor of Pullman, but he is also better known as the announcer for Cougs games, folks agreed.

Duncan

In this artist's sketch, Joseph Edward Duncan appears in federal court Wednesday in Boise. Today, a federal judge agreed to delay jury selection in Duncan's death penalty hearing after defense attorneys objected to proceeding without deciding whether the convicted killer will be allowed to represent himself in court. Sketch by Ward F. Hooper.

Great that the Associated Press shared this courtroom sketch of Joseph Duncan because it reflects how he looks these days, online/multimedia producer Andrew Zahler said (Hasn't exactly been an abundance of Duncan photo opportunities). Another discussion point, if Duncan were to represent himself, folks said, there's a hairy possibility of him cross-examining the witnesses, i.e. that he'd be asking questions of Shasta Groene should she testify.

Police notes

• We had a visit from public information officer Jennifer DeRuwe from Spokane Police and her new assistant.
• With all due respect to our visitors, Smith enjoyed reading the column by Doug Clark...
• Who commented on the proposal discussion in this Karen Dorn Steele story on the police oversight proposal discussion (story includes audio clips).

Chiefs scoreboard fire

Smith was not the only one wondering why arena was not evacuated after a minor fire in the Spokane Chiefs venue - it was very "brief and quickly contained" electrical fire on the scoreboard. Perhaps they were trying to avoid causing a panic, one staffer said this morning, but "I'm thinking the guys with sticks will get out first" in such a case, deputy city editor Hansen said.

We're not getting six feet of Snow

Snow vs. Tony Snow, Hansen joked earlier this morning when we were hearing hints of a cancellation. Snow's appearance at EWU has indeed been cancelled.

Coming up

A live KSPS-produced town hall meeting for Our Kids: Our Business. (This will be a panel discussion with studio audience), and in-depth coverage on winners of the nacho contest (no Peeps - Smith still feels shortchanged).

Each weekday morning and afternoon, the newsroom staff meets to discuss the coverage plan. This blog covers editors' discussions, upcoming coverage and miscellaneous newsroom news.
