Movies & More

Over the Pacific with Tracy and Hepburn

I'm typing this from the 12th floor of a hotel overlooking Waikiki Beach. Seriously. But don't feel too envious. My morning cup of Kona coffee was only lukewarm.

On the flight over, I did something new. I actually rented one of those mini-digital-movie readers, for $12, even though not one of the movies was particularly interesting. I almost watched "Avatar" for the second time, but I came to my senses quickly enough (no 3-D, no IMAX screen, what was I thinking?).

I opted for the 1957 film "Desk Set," one of the nine movies that Katherine Hepburn made with Spencer Tracy and certainly one of the least. Call it "Mad Men" without the anachronistic charms. It is a product of the late '50s without commenting on that era in the slightest. And it has one of the most absurd, stragely uncalled for musical numbers I have ever seen.

What was Walter Lang thinking?

Still, it was the best option available. And it let me know what I want for Christmas.

An iPad.

Below: The utterly strange musical number from "Desk Set."
