Car theft suspect arrested after police chase

A 24-year-old man was arrested Monday after Spokane Valley police say he tried fleeing them in a stolen Honda.

Daniel Allen Wessels, of 19900 E. Maxwell in Greenacres, was spotted in the Honda after a resident in the 1100 block of South Herald reported to Crime Check that a man had pulled up in a car and transported items to another car, then drove away.

The second car's license plates came back to a stolen Honda, and Officer Chan Erdman spotted the car on Dishman-Mica Road about 11:15 a.m.

Wessels led Erdman on a high-speed chase, then jumped out of the moving Honda in a parking lot between Argonne and Mullan roads. Edrman chased him down and handcuffed him "with little resistance," police said.

In the Honda, police found property believed to have been stolen from other cars. The first car Wessels drove to South Herald turned out to be a stolen car. Another stolen car was nearby; police still are investigating its origins.

Wessels was booked into jail on charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, attempting to elude a police vehicle and a warrant for escape from community custody.

Wessels has convictions for second degree possession of stolen property, second degree burglary, and second degree theft. He was arrested in 2004 with a man who told the newspaper he stole to "make ends meet." Read the story here.
