Second round of 1B today
First day of State 1B basketball was a success, with eight of 10 area teams winning. But it's too bad, given tradition and history, - and I've addressed this before - that District 9 and District 7 schools, given their proximity, were thrust against each other so early.
In today's girls tournament quarterfinals, Almira/Coulee-Hartline plays Colton at 4 p.m. after first-day wins. And St. John-Endicott meets Garfield-Palouse in the 9 p.m. nightcap. It would have been nicer if they were split until the semifinals.
The Eagles beat Curlew on the first day and Tekoa-Oakesdale and Cusick boys squared off right away.
At least the Nighthawks and fellow first game winner Garfield-Palouse don't meet until the semifinals and there could be an all Whitman County final if Rosalia gets through a tough half bracket.
Odessa's boys rebounded from a first-day loss to oust North River 52-37.
