• Washington State: The second of our family ties – I used to love that show when it was on in the ‘80s, but now, when I see a syndicated version, I wonder what I was thinking – stories is on the Lockers. You can find it here (can’t seem to get our website to update at 7 in the morning). Today, we’ll be doing the Trufants and tomorrow the Elisaras. … Speaking of family ties, Todd Milles highlighted another one. Seems to be a common theme this season. … We have our other story, based on a conversation with Jim Sterk, and notes here. There is also an advance of the basketball this weekend, which is the subject of this piece. … Sterk also did this interview with freelancer Howie Stalwick. … As we told you Monday in these notes, Kevin Lopina will start at quarterback for WSU. That news is the lead to this notebook. … This notebook begins with comments from Tony Thompson, who won’t be able to play. He’s one of four Cougars – Dan Spitz, B.J. Guerra and Johnny Forzani are the others – dealing with concussions this week. … Finally, the TNT’s John McGrath laments the lack of Apple Cup trash talk.
• Around the Pac-10: ESPN.com’s Ted Miller has his usual wide-ranging items, including his weekly picks and what to watch. … Buster Sports’ Nick Daschel writes Washington not only has to win this week, the Huskies have to do it in style. … Washington: There never has been a Husky freshman rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Chris Polk, a redshirt frosh, has a good chance this year with two games left. … Oregon State: Last year’s beat down by the Ducks still hurts. … Oregon: I can’t remember the last time a point after, and another pretty ugly kick, received this much ink. … California: Jahvid Best might play against UW or he might not. Even Jeff Tedford’s not sure. … Stanford: The Cardinal might play their bowl game near campus. … USC: Rivalry games some how help players get healthy. …UCLA: The Bruins’ special teams have really been special this season. … Arizona State: Another rivalry game without a lot of buzz. … Arizona: The Wildcats have some depth at running back.

• That’s all we have for this morning. We’ll be back in the afternoon with practice notes and our story. Until then …

Hi Vince—Happy T-Day. I'm thankful for the great reporting you provide on the Cougs. Enjoy the day!
I'm not surprised that T Thompson won't be back for the Apple Cup. I ran into a person very much in the know prior to the UCLA game who basically said that after 4 concussions, he felt this kid was going to hang it up…even if he was considered “cleared” to play. No point risking long term brain injury for a small amount of glory on a 1-10 team. Smart move.
I'll watch the game, but I'm not optimistic. We've struggled all year matching up against opponents with team speed, and the Huskies have it. If the UCLA QB can score on a 60 yard run, I really hate to think what Locker will do. UW has also demonstrated that they can put points on the board against anyone. WSU has not….ever this season. Add in a decimated defense due to injuries and a band-aid offensive line and it clearly indicates one thing; another Cougar slap down.
I'm sticking with my prediction: UW 42-WSU 13.
Happy T-Day. Go Cougs.

Favorite memory - 1997 apple cup. Jackson down the sideline. Sticking to the sideline theme… Trandon Harvey down the sideline for the comeback win..
Least favorite…. Triple OT loss #3 in the country. Reggie Williams taunting the student section climbin the rail to talk trash then wondering why bottles started flying out of the air..
Only need 3 points to stay out of the record books!! After an explosive performance against the beavs I think we can do it!
Lopina starting will give this team a new energy, I hope. He was the husky killer last year, he is a senior and he plays with energy. He also knows this is his last time ever playing football and should play his butt off.
Keys to the game.
1. If the cougs get a lead I wonder how they would react. We have not led a game ALL YEAR. If we could get up 3-0 this team might play out of their minds not having to get up from a knockout punch. Well heres to hoping.
2. Rollout, rollout, rollout… Let Lopina use his feet he as a few options to pass on the rollout play and if not he tucks and runs for yards. Take a hit and go out bruised and battered. Lets face it this is his last time ever putting on a helmet and he will want to win and go out taking some hits… He is pretty decent when scrambling. Throw in a naked boot when they start cheating.
3. Pray to the apple cup gods that we can make it 3 in a row for the first time ever and win 5 out of 6 apple cups, and 4 in a row in husky stadium.
4. Hit Middleton early and often when he is on the line and cheap elbows for being a punk. Typical UW attitude. 0-12 last year and not a great team this year and you still talk that much trash. I know we suck but give me a break.
The one good thing I will say for Wulff's staff is they know how important it is to beat the huskies. He is a true coug in that sense. An apple cup win is equal to 2 pac 10 wins unless one of those would have taken you bowling (doba knows what I am talking about).
I am going to get good and drunk sit in the endzone 2 miles from the field thanks to the track and hope I get to see Wulff's pathetic jumping again!! I will rush the field to dance on the W at age 31 if we win this.

Vince and family have a happy thanksgiving day. I remember and injoyed the snowbowl apple cup the best. We had gotten our feet wet walking around and by half time freezing and wondering if we had any toes left. W e went up to the cub to warm up . Standing room only, we watched the rest of the game on a big tv there. A mom and sister of our team's defensive end had flown out to see the game and watch there son play. They really injoyed watching him making a lot of tackles. Sorry i just can't remember the defensive end's name now. The cub standing room crowd was very happy that day. Containing washington's Qtr. back and running back is the key to winnig this game. This apple cup is closer then the popular opinion , Cougs win by a field goal. GO COUGS

last year. A downer cougar team manages an epic drive to tie the game then proceed to win in over time.
and because it left UW winless

My favorite Apple Cup moment….that is hard to say…i have a couple…My first memorable Apple Cup moment was watching the game at Albi Stadium in 1972 when the Cougs upset the Huskies and sacked Sonny Sixkiller seven times. Biggest memory from that game is Gary Larsen after sacking Sixkiller doing a war dance over him. Today he would be flagged but wasn't at the time…
My second favorite moment was the Blizzard Bowl in Pullman in 1992…Bledsoe to Phillip Bobo as he slides into a snow drift and Shaumbe Wright Fair busting two long touchdown runs and rushing for 194 yards….

anytime we beat the huskies in anything is a good memory.. I notice we only did the charity to raise money and paint the space needle once. Since we have won huskies dont want to partake in that again. I had so many huskies talk to me about how pissed they were the space needle was painted in coug colors and go cougs.. loved it..

This year's game doesn't bode well at all for the Cougs. The horrible injury bug that has hit the Cougs has made it all but impossible for this year's team to compete. The truth is the Huskies should win and win big. If they don't win big it will be a huge embarrassment to the Montlake gang. So the pressure is all on the University of Washington—not only to win—but to win in a huge blowout!!!
However, this game has had some huge upsets. 1982, 2001 and 2002 to name a few. And if Locker gets hurt, all bets are off!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all…I'll be giving thanks that I do not need to hear anymore Cougar football scores.
However, my favorite Apple Cup has to be the Snow Bowl…Though Jackson flating the husky DB ranks right up there.

I was at the 88 and 92 games and both are up there but I guess I would go with 92 and Snow Bowl. I wasn't at the 97 game but winning to get to the Rose Bowl is obviously up there as well.
Worst for me is 81 when a win would have meant a Rose Bowl.

The 1975 Apple Cup and the 2002 Apple Cup are big in my memory because they were devastating losses. They both ended in such bizarre ways and just tore the Coug's heart out.
The 1982 Apple Cup is still my favorite. The Coug win just came out of nowhere and Chuck Nelson missing the Husky field goal. I still get shivers up and down my spine to this day thinking about it.
Go Cougs!

Yep, '82 was a good one. I was with my Dad at that game as a middle school kid. We were in the endzone on that kick. As my Dad and I were celebrating the miss I see an obviously miffed Dawg fan try to take a swing at my Dad. He was further off than Nelson and we continued to celebrate!.

Brink to Gibson. Loved it! Huskies were definitely expecting run….thinking we were setting up for a field goal. SURPRISE! Brandon Gibson was another in the long line of special Cougs. A class act who played his senior season on a less than average team.

1992, no question. I remember looking out over the field and seeing the snow blow horizontally over the stadium, spending halftime huddled under a wet wool blanket with a friend and jumping up and down on numb feet when DBleds hit Bobo.
That night the one of the weather guys in Portland, a WSU alum (Portland was where my parents lived) gave the weather in Pullman as “a high of 42 and a low of 23.”

So many great Apple Cups….but my favorite was '82. The Cougs looked great in all crimson, and it was the first time in a long time that they did that. When Nelson missed the field goal you could feel the stadium rise off the ground as we all jumped straight up at once…it was incredible !
