Looking into the crystal ball

Greater Spokane League football approaches the mid-point of the season (for some teams) which led me to project out the remainder of the season and predict an outcome. Several key games remain that will determine the fortunes of league teams - for Lewis and Clark, Mead and University in particular.

Looking into the crystal ball, I see a possible three-way tie for first place among Ferris, Gonzaga Prep and Mt. Spokane with Mead and Central Valley settling the third 4A playoff berth and East Valley getting the second 3A spot.

The caveats: The LC, Gonzaga Prep, Ferris rivalry is unpredictable, games that could get the Tigers back into it. CV and Prep avoid Mt. Spokane, so the Wildcats games with Ferris (Thursday night) and LC loom large. And EV could be a factor as it was last year when it beat the Tigers.

The Bears and Mead need to win at least one of their three games and possibly two against remaining three 4A foes, with their head-to-head likely the biggest.

For the Titans to stay in it they need three more outcomes like last week's win over Prep -  against Ferris, Mead, LC or Mt. Spokane. As Titans coach Bill Diedrick told me - "You can't think too far ahead, but a lot of head-to-head games all of a sudden have become a bit bigger."
