Raiders, Rangers play for fourth

Waking up early on a Saturday is torture for a 16-year old high school kid. So waking them up early on a Saturday to play a basketball game is probably akin to asking the dead to rise and put on a broadway show.

But that is what is being asked of the Lake Roosevelt and La Conner boys teams and the Selkirk and Neah Bay girls. Playing at 8 a.m., an hour earlier than Thursday and Friday's earliest tilts, they will battle it out for fourth place at the Spokane Arena.

In State 2B boys' action, Lake Roosevelt bounced back in its second game, handling Waitsburg-Prescott, while La Conner outlasted Adna.

The State 1B girls' fourth-place trophy will go to either Selkirk or Neah Bay, who both registered blow out wins in their second games against Lopez and Mary M. Knight respectively.

LAKE ROOSEVELT VS. LA CONNER

La Conner finally gets on the board with a layup from Landy James to end a 7-0 Raider run to start the first quarter. LR held the Braves scoreless for the first 3:18 of the frame.

The Raiders will be tested now as Ty Egbert goes to the bench saddled with two early fouls. The second was questionable at best as it came immediately following a made layup by the LR big man. I guess the referee didn't like the way he came down into one of the La Conner players?

Lake Roosevelt 14, La Conner 7 through one quarter

Tommy Lee Turner scores with 10 seconds left on the clock, the first field goal for the Raiders since losing Egbert to two fouls with almost four minutes left in the quarter. The good news for the Raiders, though is La Conner scored only two points in that span, helping LR take a seven-point lead at the end of the first.

Kohler completes a one-on-four break to put the Raiders up by nine. He then picks up his second foul, trying to pick Novak's pocket. Not the best move for one of this team's leaders.

Two straight 3-pointers by the Braves shaves the LR lead to six. A third 3-ball in a 30 second span cuts it to four.

Lake Roosevelt 25, La Conner 20 halftime

The Raiders hit 3 of 4 free throws in the last minute to push their lead back to five after an 11-1 run had La Conner within two after trailing by as many as 12.

James drains a quick 3-pointer for La Conner to cut the lead back to two.

Mike Wilbut hits a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one, but the Braves leave Keith Rosenbaum wide open on the ensuing possession trying to double down on Egbert, and Rosenbaum makes them pay, hitting an open trey with 1:11 left in the third.

Lake Roosevelt 37, La Conner 33 through three quarters

The line has not been kind to La Conner in this game. They are 0 for 9 at the stripe in the game and a missed pair leads to a bucket by Egbert to push the Raider lead to eight.

Spencer Novak hits his third and fourth 3-point baskets to cut the lead to four. LR has been able to score on the other end, but their lead is slowly dwindling.

A team that has hit upwards of 10 3-point shots should not be 1 of 12 from the free throw line. But if La Conner loses they have only to look at the abysmal shooting from the line.

After going down by nine on a pair of free throws by Kohler, Novak picks the Braves up off the mat with yet another 3-point shot. LR leads by six with 1:03 remaining.

The Raiders have been nearly perfect at the charity stripe in this fourth quarter and with it now push their lead to 12 with 19.5 seconds remaining.

SELKIRK VS. NEAH BAY

After trailing 4-3, the Red Devils went on a 10-2 run to take a seven-point lead. Cierra Moss already has six points to lead the Devils.

Neah Bay 15, Selkirk 11 through one quarter

The Red Devils led by as many as seven in the first frame, but the Rangers battled back, using the free throw line to close to within four.

Neah Bay scores 6 of the quarter's first 7 points to open a nine-point advantage.

Neah Bay 25, Selkirk 19 halftime

The Rangers score five straight at one point to get within four and end the half down six to the Red Devils, who have a combined 19 points from Moss, Courtney Winck and Rebecca Thompson.

The Rangers have scored 12 points in the first 5:55 of the third quarter, cutting the NB lead to just two after trailing by nine early in the frame.

Neah Bay 41, Selkirk 38 through three quarters

A wild flurry of scoring highlights the last two minutes of the third and with one quarter to play, the Red Devils hold a slim three-point advantage. Annie Couch has seven points for the Rangers.

Three seems to be the magic number for the Rangers. They have been within three several times in the second half, but have yet to push through that barrier to take a lead.

The Rangers knot things up at 46 and then take their first lead since the opening minutes on a 2-pointer by Couch.

Down two, the Rangers get the last possession with 26 seconds left, but are unable to get a shot up in that time as Neah Bay holds on for the win.

Flash Hodges also has eight points after scoring just two in yesterday's win against Columbia Adventist. Lummi has yet to find its rhythm against the pressure defense of the Spartans and has just four field goals in the first two quarters.
