A holiday Monday morning from WSU

COUGARS

Today marks the unofficial end of summer, the last day to wear white pants at the Hamptons. At least that's what my friend Jay Gatsby used to tell me. But it's also the beginning of the college football season, when half the teams are still undefeated and possibilities seem endless. Except maybe in the state south of us. Read on.

••••••••••

• Washington State: The Cougars are, like their fans, still undefeated. We looked back at their win with this story, which also touches on the next opponent, UNLV. ... We have this piece from Las Vegas to whet your appetite about the Rebels prior to your cookout tonight. ... Remember one-year receiver Johnny Forzani. We do, especially the rims on his car and the 99-yard touchdown pass he hauled in from Jeff Tuel. Well, there's this long feature about Forzani and his father in the Calgary Herald. About 99 yards long.

• Around the Pac-12: A lot of stories about conference expansion, ranging from New York to Vancouver, Wash. ... How did the conference fare last weekend, the first of the year? Not too well, but neither did the SEC. ... Ted Miller hears the cries of Duck and Beaver fans. ... Washington: After EWU passed nearly 70 times against the Huskies, Hawaii brings its passing offense to town. ... Oregon State: Though he wasn't in the second half last Saturday, Ryan Katz remains the Beavers quarterback for now. ... Oregon: The Ducks couldn't overcome their mistakes against a team as good as LSU. ... California: Nothing here. ... Stanford: Or here. ... Colorado: The Buffaloes' offense wasn't sparkling and new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy takes the blame. ... Utah: A football game, even the first Pac-12 football game, doesn't seem all that important to the Utes right now. ... Even so, the game will be played and they know they have to play better than they did in the opener. ... USC: There is already some grumbling about playing time in the Coliseum. ... UCLA: The Bruins have no idea who their quarterback will be this week. ... Arizona State: Vontaze Burfict got his season off to a great start. ... Arizona: So did running back Ka'Deem Carey.

• That's it for this holiday morning. The Cougars practice late this evening, real late, and will be back after that. Until then ...
