In a photo provided by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, sparks fly from the Bay Bridge's lower level on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, over Yerba Buena Island, Calif., as workers cut through a section of roadway. The bridge is closed through Labor Day weekend as part of an ongoing project to construct a new Eastern span. As part of the weekend project, Caltrans officials say a 300-foot-long double-deck section of the east span will be cut out and moved out of the way. When that work is done, a new double-deck section will be moved into place to connect the bridge with a short detour.
