U.S. Pavilion lighting

A team of high-level decisionmakers overseeing Riverfront Park’s $64 million redesign were shown images this week of what will likely be the final recommendation on shading options within the new U.S. Pavilion. Illumination “blades” are also being tested this week that are expected to light up the original netting when the structure re-opens next year.

In this 1979 photo, a model of a proposed new roof for the Riverfront Park Pavilion is shown by Chris Kopczynski of Kop Construction, which has submitted plans to city officials for their consideration. The project, incorporating swooped concrete beams, concrete panels and plastic skylights, would cost "in the neighborhood of $2.5 million," he said.

FILE - Workers tearing down the former covering of the U.S. Pavilion in 1979. The 225-foot boom crane at right was a temporary addition to the skyline over Riverfront Park. The crane, with an operator and rigger, was rented for $65 an hour to remove the 100,000 square foot tattered vinyl roof atop the Riverfront Park Pavilion by hoisting workmen to the top of the 140-foot high structure to cut the fabric away.
