Bruce Spang of Kendrick, Idaho, survived the sinking of the SS John Straub, a Merchant Marine ship that went down in the Gulf of Alaska in 1944, killing 55 servicemen. Spang, who floated for several hours in the frigid sea, says: "I survived by sheer luck. It just wasn't my time to go."
