Mariners closer Edwin Diaz named American League Reliever of the Year

After a brilliant season where he led all of baseball with 57 saves, most of them protecting the slimmest of leads, Mariners closer Edwin Diaz has earned the top relief pitching honor. Before Saturday’s Game 4 of the World Series in Los Angeles, Major League Baseball announced that Diaz was named the 2018 Mariano Rivera American League Reliever of the Year, which is given to the season’s top reliever in the American League.

M’s GM Jerry Dipoto says Ichiro will get chance to play in 2019

Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto said Ichiro Suzuki will be in spring training with the Mariners in 2019 and hinted the veteran outfielder could be on the roster when the club opens the season next March with a pair of games in Tokyo against the Oakland Athletics.

Mariners part ways with pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre

The Mariners made one significant change to their coaching staff following the 2018 season. At a small news conference at Safeco Field on Monday afternoon, manager Scott Servais announced pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre will not be retained for the 2019 season.

Out of Right Field: Looking ahead to the Mariners’ 2019 season

Since Mitch Haniger has shown he can play center field for the Mariners, how about Bryce Harper in right next season? To afford Harper and his record-setting free-agent deal likely in the neighborhood of $400 million, the Mariners would have to jettison the following contracts: pitcher Felix Hernandez ($27.86 million), second baseman Robinson Cano ($24 million) and third baseman Kyle Seager ($19.5 million). No problem, right?

Mariners top Rangers 3-1 to finish off 2018

Adrian Beltre and the Texas Rangers were shut down by Seattle starter Roenis Elias in the Mariners’ 3-1 win on Sunday that closed out the 2018 season. The day was overshadowed with what-ifs mostly about whether Beltre will retire after 21 seasons, but also if Nelson Cruz will be back in Seattle in 2019 with his contract up after the season.

Edwin Diaz gets save No. 57 in Mariners’ win over Rangers

With a crowd of 31,780 packed into Safeco Field, the Mariners got a solid start from their best starting pitcher, a fair amount off offense in support and shutout work from the back of their bullpen, including save No. 57 for Edwin Diaz in a 4-1 victory over the Texas Rangers.

Rangers break through in seventh, beat Mariners 2-0

First baseman Ronald Guzman broke a tie with an RBI single in the seventh inning, and the Texas Rangers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Guzman hammered reliever Zach Duke’s sinking fastball into the right-center gap, scoring Ryan Rua, who reached base on a one-out double.

A’s clinch then party at Mariners’ expense

The deciding moment came just about two minutes after the first pitch had been thrown Monday night at Safeco Field. A result from a game 3,000 miles away — a Yankees victory over the Rays — made it official.
