Pasco ex-policeman arrested in 1986 Spokane killing

Spokane police have arrested a former Pasco police officer suspected of strangling a woman in 1986. Detectives brought Richard J. Aguirre, 51, to the Spokane County Jail, where he awaits formal murder charges in the killing of Ruby Doss.

Cliff Drive scenic vista blocked by boulders

Spokane residents have mixed feelings about the city’s plan to curb noise and litter problems at a popular South Hill overlook that provides a panoramic view of the city. A small stretch of land beside Cliff Drive recently was closed off to vehicle parking when city workers moved several dozen large boulders to the side of the road. The overlook is a popular spot to meditate and hold picnics, watch fireworks on the Fourth of July, and take graduation and wedding pictures. It’s also a magnet for young people who play loud music and leave behind garbage, according to some who live nearby.

Victims were shot to death before house fire

Spokane County detectives believe a fire department lieutenant, his wife and her adult son were shot to death, then whoever did it set fire to the family’s home to destroy evidence of the crime. The county Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victims as Spokane Fire Lt. Terry Canfield, 59; Lisa M. Canfield, 52; and John Robert Constable, 23.

Man who assaulted woman with hatchet sentenced, released

A Spokane man who assaulted a woman with a hatchet after dragging her into a garage and demanding sex in 2012 was sentenced Wednesday and will soon be released. Greggory L. Pruett, 34, was sentenced to 26 months in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree assault with a deadly weapon. He already has served a longer period of time since his arrest, about 28 months, in the Spokane County Jail and will be released after his sentencing is processed.

Spokane, East Valley teachers walk out to protest funding

Spokane and East Valley teachers left their classrooms for the day Wednesday, flooding the sidewalks along busy intersections with signs aimed at the state Legislature. They cheered when they heard friendly honks in return from passing motorists. There were only occasional shouts of opposition.
