Tested for first time in weeks, CdA tops Post Falls

The top-ranked Coeur d’Alene Vikings were tested for the first time in six games, trailed for the first time in seven games – and still won by 28 points. The Vikings broke from a tie score early in the second quarter with 28 unanswered points and rolled to a 63-35 5A Inland Empire League football victory over visiting Post Falls on Friday.

Whitworth host to winless Pacific at Pine Bowl today

Sometimes it’s not only how you play but who you play. The Whitworth Pirates are struggling at 1-5, but those losses have come against opponents with a combined 22-5 record. That won’t be the case when Pacific, winless since bringing back its football program in 2010, visits the Pine Bowl at 1 p.m. today.

Newcomers focus at Gonzaga’s first practice

Six guys who haven’t played a second for the Gonzaga men’s basketball team were the primary topic of discussion as the Bulldogs held their first official practice Friday at the McCarthey Athletic Center. GU’s highly touted recruiting class – freshmen Gary Bell Jr., Kevin Pangos, Ryan Spangler, Kyle Dranginis and Chris Sarbaugh and JC transfer Guy Landry Edi – went through drills alongside nine returning players who helped the Zags to a 25-win season that ended with a second-round loss to Brigham Young in the 2011 NCAA tournament.

Whits at 4-0 Pioneers

Lewis & Clark’s and Whitworth’s football teams are turning back the clock. That’s a welcome change for the upstart Pioneers, not so much for the Pirates. Whitworth’s run of 12 consecutive series wins could be in jeopardy when it takes on the Pioneers (4-0, 1-0 Northwest Conference) at 1 p.m. today at Griswold Stadium in Portland. The Pirates are trying to snap a three-game losing streak, all three decided late in the fourth quarter.

Whitworth, CCS, NIC in title mix

Midway through their conference seasons, three non-Division I volleyball programs in the region are pursuing titles. That’s not a surprise. Whitworth, North Idaho College and Community Colleges of Spokane are often in the mix in their respective conferences.

Whitworth suffers emotional setback

The Whitworth Pirates, who had already suffered through three close losses, endured their most painful defeat of the season Saturday. Just when it appeared the Pirates had forced overtime with a late touchdown and defensive stop, they were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, setting up Nick Kaylor’s 36-yard field goal that gave Pacific Lutheran a 20-17 Northwest Conference football victory in front of 2,440 at the Pine Bowl.

Whits look for good finish

The Whitworth Pirates have played pretty good football, but they don’t have a lot to show for it. The Pirates’ 1-3 record could easily be flip-flopped, but they’ve let two fourth-quarter leads slip away, the most recent coming in a 24-17 home loss to Menlo two weeks ago. The point of emphasis during Whitworth’s bye week was obvious: finish.

Post Falls topples Lake City

They weren’t the only plays that influenced the outcome, but they were two of the biggest. Late in the first half with the score tied, Post Falls High, facing fourth-and-1 at Lake City’s 4, opted to pass out of the Wildcat formation and it worked to perfection as Marcus Colbert hit Tyson Johnson in the end zone.

Tough road back

Cora Kellerman was a middle schooler at a swimming party in her hometown of La Conner, Wash., when she first noticed something was wrong. She exited the pool exhausted, her heart racing, and called her mom. “We saw a doctor in Seattle and he ran a couple of tests, but he said it was more of a nuisance,” Kellerman said. “But then each year it got worse, more frequent. Last year I went in Aug. 5 for an appointment right after I had a really bad episode.”

Pirates fail to hold off Menlo at Pine Bowl

Frustration, Part III. Whitworth added to its growing list of losing winnable football games, coming up short in the trenches and falling to Menlo 24-17 in front of 1,405 Saturday at the Pine Bowl.

Whitworth Pirates take on another challenge in Menlo

A week after playing well but falling short against a quality opponent, the Whitworth Pirates get a second chance today when Menlo visits the Pine Bowl. Menlo, formerly a football-only member of the Northwest Conference now back in the NAIA, sports a 3-0 record, including a 41-17 victory over Occidental, typically an NCAA Division III power. Menlo, based in Atherton, Calif., also defeated NWC member Pacific 26-13.

Whitworth falls shy of 17th-ranked Redlands

The Whitworth Pirates showed they could play with 17th-ranked Redlands, but playing with the Bulldogs wasn’t their objective. Whitworth had two costly fumbles and an ill-fated deflection helped sink the Pirates’ upset hopes as Redlands (Calif.) escaped with a 30-20 nonconference football victory Saturday in front of 1,850 at the Pine Bowl. The Pirates, bidding for their first win over a ranked opponent since 2007, dropped to 1-2.

Whitworth faces tall task in Redlands

Whitworth and Redlands today renew their nonconference football rivalry for the eighth straight year and the Pirates face a stiff challenge to stop the visitors’ four-game winning streak in the series. Redlands (1-0) scored with 24 seconds left to knock off No. 4 North Central (Ill.) two weeks ago. The victory moved the Bulldogs up to No. 17 and the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference power also comes in rested following a bye week.
