YMCA, YWCA move forward on new facilities

The YMCA and YWCA are making progress on two large facilities that will serve as hubs for recreation and social services. YMCA filed a building permit application for its complex planned along the Newport Highway in North Spokane and is taking bids for contractors. That facility will include a 2,000-square-foot satellite office for the YWCA.

Worthy has big plans for airport property

Worthy Enterprises LLC is doing extensive testing that will shape how 80 acres of craggy land near Spokane International Airport develops. While long-term plans for the property could result in 900,000 square feet of office, retail, warehouse and storage space, in the end, Walt Worthy said, the scope and size of the project and the time it takes to build it out boils down to big rocks, soil composition and plenty of testing.

After years of painstakingly restoring the E.J. Roberts' Mansion in Browne's Addition, Mary Moltke may soon reap a tangible return on her sweat equity. "I've basically done a room a year for the last 24 years," said Moltke, who recently received official city approval to host special events at the mansion and to open a restaurant in an adjacent historic house that's across from the Elk Public House, at Pacific Avenue and Cannon Street.

Here’s the dirt : Yoke’s closing smaller store

The River Ridge Yoke's is closing after more than a decade of operating in the shopping center at Wellesley Avenue and Assembly Street in northwest Spokane. Over the years, the center housed a series of food markets, including the Ben Hogan store, which opened in 1951. The store was later sold to Rosauers before becoming River Ridge Food and Drug and finally a Yoke's Pac 'n Save.

Pinecroft Business Park is expanding as it caters to a growing number of national, international and regional companies seeking office space with ample parking, picnic areas and even basketball courts. "We're trying to create an environment that is comfortable," said John Miller, managing partner for Pinecroft LLC, a group of nine investors and companies that owns the park.

Spokane building sold to investors

The nearly century-old building that houses the downtown Spokane U.S. Bank branch was recently sold to a Northwest investment partnership. A limited liability company owned by Mara Gateway, a Bainbridge Island-based group, purchased the 160,000-square-foot building from West Riverside Investors, a Spokane company that includes managing partner Jerry Hagood, a founder of Kiemle & Hagood Co.

After nearly a half-century of living in a three-bedroom house, Mary Pichette is ready to downsize. But before she can simplify her life, the 84-year-old mother of five has to work through the complicated process of paring down a lifetime's worth of possessions and selling her North Spokane home. "I've got a lot of boxes, that's for sure," she said. Pichette is among a group of people who've turned to senior real estate specialists to get help with the financial, lifestyle and transitional aspects of buying and selling property. Her Realtor, Kathy Bryant of Keller Williams Realty Spokane, helped Pichette ready her home for sale and is advising her on how to get rid of mementos and household items so she can fit comfortably into a small apartment.

Picketing carpenters get a few joiners

A picket line representing the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America has some non-brethren in the mix. The union is paying people who have no ties to the brotherhood to tote signs and jointly chant about the need for higher wages and benefits, a union representative confirmed. About half of the dozen people marching in front of the Riverside Avenue U.S. Bank Building on Friday morning were hired help making non-union wages.

WinCo will open Spokane store

A bag-it-yourself grocery chain with an emphasis on a big selection at low prices is moving into the Spokane marketplace. WinCo Foods Inc., which operates 57 stores in Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California and Oregon, plans to build a 94,000-square foot warehouse-style grocery store in north Spokane, on Nevada Street, and Holland Avenue, east of the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Colton Street.

Arena goes beyond beer and brats

People attending future events at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena may soon have seared ahi tuna as a dining choice, along with the soft pretzels and cheese. The Spokane Public Facilities District is collaborating with Centerplate, the concession and catering provider for the arena and convention center, on Northwest Grill. The dining room could seat as many as 250 people and offer a more exclusive — albeit more expensive — menu. Entrée possibilities include tenderloin steaks and salmon salads.

Fitness retailer growing again

A locally owned company selling home and commercial exercise equipment is expanding as it caters to a growing wellness market. Better Body Fitness is opening a 15,000-square-foot warehouse store with a service center and offices at 165 S. Pine St., near Division Street and Second Avenue. The downtown complex is expected to open in October and will offer used and new scratch-and-dent equipment, along with a selection of new products, including Crocs and Sanuk footwear.

Downtown drugstore sold

A downtown building that's housed a familiar drugstore for about 25 years is being sold. The Hart & Dilatush Pharmacy complex at the corner of Stevens Street and Sprague Avenue, next to the Ridpath Hotel, is being purchased by an undisclosed buyer who is converting its four bays into commercial condos.

Cabela's, a destination sporting goods store that's being built in Post Falls, is in the midst of hiring 250 people for jobs that the company says provide competitive wages and benefits including a matching 401(k) plan. "I thought the package was really exceptional, especially for our area," said Pam Houser, president and CEO of the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce.

A Spokane-based company that operates medical imaging centers is opening two new locations – including a Deer Park center and a large facility in Gilbert, Ariz. Inland Imaging will open a 3,500-square foot facility offering magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography services and procedures in Deer Park.

America the Beautiful Dreamer, a store specializing in bedroom furniture, is moving out of NorthTown Mall and into its own building at 7306 N. Division St., near Costco. The 12,000-square-foot store is a little bigger and the stand-alone building can become more of a destination for furniture shoppers than the current site, said Doug De Grange, an owner of the business.

A soda chain that sold "stubby" bottles of pop that customers could mix and match has reopened after a two-decade absence. The Pop Shoppe, a familiar name to pop-lovers who lived in the area during the 1970s, recently opened in a 350-square foot store at 1002 S. Perry St.

Tribe unveils casino project

Northern Quest Casino will undergo a $275 million expansion that will add a 350-room hotel with a nine-story glass atrium featuring indoor waterfalls and a winding river. Kent Caputo, chief operating officer for the Kalispel Tribe's economic enterprises, said it has taken a year and a half of planning to come up with designs, which include a casino that's nearly three times the size of the existing operation, a 2,300-seat event hall, a 10,000-square-foot luxury spa with a pool, and a six-story parking garage.

A former Metropolitan Mortgage & Securities Co. affiliate is moving back downtown, but its employees will share a building with a tenant that is as different as night and day. Western United Life Assurance Co. will occupy more than 21,000-square feet of space at Monroe Street and Sprague Avenue during the workday, while The Big Easy Concert House hosts a revolving assortment of bands at night.

Hotel to replace downtown church

A church visible from a busy freeway off-ramp that some consider a gateway to Spokane has been sold to a couple who plan to build a Best Western Hotel. St. John's Lutheran Church, at the corner of Division Street and Third Avenue, has been purchased for $1.9 million by John and Rita Santillanes, owners of the Best Western Peppertree Inns near the Spokane International Airport and in Liberty Lake.

Destination Northern Quest?

The Kalispel Tribe of Indians plans to transform Northern Quest Casino into more of a destination resort with a hotel, enlarged casino, theater and added convention and meeting space. The project, which is broader in scope than the details that are available through planning documents, will create an estimated 500 construction jobs and 420 permanent jobs, a representative of the Tribe confirmed.

A 328-store chain that bills itself as having the number one selling brand of furniture in North America is opening its first store in the region. A 56,500-square-foot Ashley Furniture HomeStore is planned on 3.7 acres of land in the Liberty Lake Corporate Park, just west of The Home Depot.

Equipment supplier moving to Riverwalk

The group redeveloping a historic building that once housed Bayou Brewery Co. is starting construction this week after landing a sizable tenant. Lincare Inc., a Clearwater, Fla.-based company that supplies medical equipment for in-home treatment, will lease the 13,000-square-foot upper floor of Riverwalk, said David Birge, who is developing the project with Mark Baier and Gavin Swenson. After the work is complete, Lincare will move its Rock Pointe office to Riverwalk, 1007 E. Trent Ave. Lincare's other local offices will stay where they are.

Pills for pets

Millie outperforms many shortstops when it comes to fielding her favorite ball. The 9-year-old black Labrador retriever suffers from some of the same nagging health issues that dog humans — including an arthritic knee. After the Lab went through knee surgery several years ago, her owners Charlie and Karen Romberg of Spokane started giving her an over-the-counter canine anti-inflammatory and a glucosamine supplement to help her live a less painful life.
