Romance, horror, drama and foreign languages

I’ve already written about “Memory,” the film opening wide on Friday that stars Liam Neeson as a hired killer facing dementia. But it’s not the only movie opening at a local mainstream theater.

Following are a few more, three of which are foreign-language projects (and all of which will play at AMC River Park Square):

“Hatching”: A Finnish horror film, “Hatching” is a family dysfunction tale involving a 12-year-old gymnast who finds a mysterious egg. When it hatches, it acts out her repressed desires.

Katie Walsh of Tribune News Service wrote, “Like many great monster movies, “ ‘Hatching’ uses a monster as a metaphor for repressed emotion, and the creature at the center of this film is one of the most uniquely grotesque creations seen on screen in a long time.”

“Firebird”: Set during the Cold War, and based on a true story, this romantic drama tells the story of two Soviet airmen who fall in love and find themselves struggling against strict prohibitions regarding same-sex relationships.

Leslie Felperin of The Guardian wrote, “The film’s exploration of love, courage and the price of speaking your truth is as timely as it’s ever been, and for Russians particularly.”

“Heropanti 2”: A sequel to the 2014 film “Heropanti,” this Hindi-language production about the struggles between a computer genius and a cybercriminal in which “high-octane action forms the story of this action-packed, sizzling romantic movie.” No reviews available.

“Runway 34”: Another Hindi-language film, this one is a taut suspense study based on a real-life story about a flight facing difficult landing in bad weather. Like “Heropanti 2” above, it features a couple of songs. No reviews available.

So go, see a movie. And enjoy.
