WATERSPORTS – Folding kayak-maker Folbot says it’s suspending operations at its factory in North Charleston, S. C., as it restructures the business, the Associated Press reports.

The Post and Courier in Charleston reported the company said in a statement Saturday that it’s neither producing new kayaks nor taking orders at this time. It’s describing the suspension of operations as a transition.

The 83-year-old specialty watercraft manufacturer started in London and has been based in Stark Industrial Park in North Charleston for the past 63 years.

Folbot made just under a dozen boat models ranging in price from $999 to $2,399. Made of lightweight aluminum and polyester, the smallest kayak weighed in at 24 pounds and the largest at 62 pounds.

The Pacific Northwest, especially Seattle and Vancouver, was a big market for the company.
