Discussing his book, “Working the Wilderness: Early Leaders for Wild Lands.” McCarthy moved to Idaho in 1977 to work trail crew in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness for the U.S. Forest Service. He started writing about wilderness as a reporter for the Lewiston Morning Tribune.
