Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich says he “can’t fathom” why Rep. Matt Shea would attend an armed protest at a wildlife refuge in Oregon over the weekend.
Shawn Vestal: Shea plays his part – backing the doofuses – in Oregon standoff
Of course he did. Our very own Bundy, Matt Shea, met last week with the armed doofuses at the Oregon bird preserve. So did North Idaho’s Heather Scott and Sage Dixon, proud defenders of the Confederate flag and all the Gem State heritage it represents, as well Graham Hunt of Orting.

Council salute to Muslim group draws protest
The Spokane City Council stepped squarely into the middle of a national debate over Muslims in America, approving a salutation to local Muslims that recognizes their contributions to the community. A proposal that seemed a simple idea a few weeks ago generated a protest from some of Spokane’s tea party faithful, who gathered outside the council’s town hall meeting at the Northeast Community Center for what they called “a rally for Spokane values.”
Washington lawmakers push to revamp state financial system
Spokane County Treasurer Rob Chase this week invited an unlikely duo to speak together on two pieces of legislation addressing the state’s financial system. Bob Hasegawa to develop a state bank.
GOP Sen. Rand Paul gives Spokane his presidential pitch
Republican presidential hopeful Rand Paul told a packed room of Spokane supporters on Wednesday he believes the GOP could capture Washington’s electoral votes in 2016, if they supported a candidate like himself. “I think the only way Republicans would have a chance in Washington is to have a more liberty-minded Republican, a more libertarian Republican,” Paul said after the speech.
Planned Parenthood protest draws hundreds
At a rally Saturday morning outside Planned Parenthood in north Spokane, state Rep. Matt Shea called the group “an evil organization” committing acts on par with Nazi Germany. “I am glad, to see finally, they have been exposed for what they are,” Shea said of Planned Parenthood. “There is no difference between Planned Parenthood, and what Dr. Josef Mengele did in Germany in the 1940s.”
State Supreme Court stands firm in dispute with Legislature over education funding
OLYMPIA – Enough already with promises to fix the state’s schools, the state Supreme Court told the Legislature on Thursday. Until the Legislature establishes a concrete plan, it’ll cost the state $100,000 a day, the justices ruled. The court strongly suggested lawmakers return to the Capitol for a fourth special session, saying it would void the fines if that results in a plan for the remaining obstacles to meeting a constitutional mandate to treat public education as the state’s paramount duty.
Rally centers on veteran, potential weapons confiscation in Priest River
A group of about 100 people in Priest River, Idaho, lined up outside a U.S. Navy veteran’s house Thursday to protest claims that federal officials plan to confiscate the man’s weapons. They were joined by Washington state Rep. Matt Shea of Spokane Valley – who described the event as a “defiance against tyranny” – and Idaho state Rep. Heather Scott of Blanchard, both Republicans.
