Tucked in the shadow of Sacred Heart Providence Medical Center is Mary’s Place, a 118-year-old home owned by Dorothy Alex, who died in 2022. A permit filed with the city on Friday, and notes from a meeting earlier this summer at City Hall, indicate more parking may take the place of this historic home.

Sacred Heart Hospital has almost completely surrounded this private residence on the South Hill of Spokane after the latest round of expansion. It is framed in a window of the main hospital building Wednesday October 11, 2006. The house of Pete and Mary Gianetsas has been in the family since 1944. One of their daughters currently lives in the four-story, 25-room landmark.

George Alex stands in the home of his sister, Dorothy Alex, who occupied the place at 104 W. Eighth Avenue for the past 30 years and died last month. The home is known as “Mary’s Place,” named for their mother, who rented rooms in the 116-year-old home and resisted offers from surrounding Sacred Heart Medical Center to buy the land for expansion.
