Lind Combine Derby drivers Caleb Hannahs, left, and Bryden Laird throw up their hands as their slow-moving vehicles lurch into each other with a screech of metal and revving diesel engins Saturday, June 10, 2023 in Lind, Washington. The longtime annual event, which is a major fundraiser for the town's Lions Club, funds many local charities and causes and included three heats, a final event and several car and truck races in between. Most of the drivers say it's all in fun and for raising money.

Love was sentenced to 17 years in prison in a Spokane courtroom for shooting Beier, a term that was part of his guilty plea agreement. George was just feet away from Beier, an Afghanistan veteran, when he was hit in the head and suffered severe brain injuries. She credits Beier's shouted warning for saving her life. The event was dreamed up by Eller, who was inspired by a similar event that happens on Lake Havasu in Arizona.

Liz and Chris Bovey, who have a rural home on the West Plains near Fairchild Air Force Base, have accumulated historic lighted signs that are displayed around their property, which they've nicknamed the "Bovey Boneyard", shown Friday, Aug. 4, 2023. The Boveys are planning a one-day event to invite up to 200 people out to wander among the signs and relive some memories of old Spokane. Bovey is best known as the artist who makes screenprinted posters of old Spokane businesses and locations.

Sweeper trucks cross the the East Trent Avenue bridge, also called the State Route 290/Trent Avenue bridge, which spans the Spokane River and is set to open Monday, July 10, shown Friday, July 7, 2023. In the background is the Hamilton bridge that connects I-90 to the University District, Gonzaga and East Mission neighborhoods. From the WSDOT press release: The new bridge incorporates several design elements from the old East Trent Bridge that was demolished in 2020-2021. The most prominent feature, the Luten style arch design, has been incorporated into portions of the pedestrian railing of the new bridge along with stamped concrete on the western retaining walls. The previous bridge was built in 1910 and had exceeded its useful lifespan.

Lyons and other volunteers set out rows of boots, with small photos and details of fallen veterans from the post-911 era. The group Washington State Fallen Heroes Project gathered the boots and created the small laminated tags from the full-sized posters that are often carried in parades to honor those killed while in uniform.

Longtime photographer and filmmaker Don Hamilton points some examples of the classic mid-century modern Jefferson Golden Hour clocks he has collected and refurbished in his tiny home workshop in Spokane, shown Monday, May 8, 2023. The modern clocks were popular as gifts in the 1950s and 1960s and they were made through 1991, then discontinued. The signature motif is that the hands of the clock appear to float on a rotating glass bezel.

Artist Ric Gendron, longtime artist and member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, stands in front of some of his work at the Marmot Art Space gallery in Kendall Yards (where he will release a new book about his work in the coming weeks) Sunday, April 30, 2023. He died in July of this year. His colorful work, featuring stylized portraits of artists, musicians and Native people, are seen around Spokane, including at the Ruby Hotel downtown.

Newly-chosen Lilac Festival Queen Josephine Ortega of Medical Lake High School is given the purpose robe by Kim Johnson before she steps to the microphone to thanks her parents on the stage at the Bing Crosby Theater in Spokane Saturday, Mar. 25, 2023 at the annual coronation event of the Lilac Festival. With the seven member of the royal court chosen, Ortega was chosen as queen and the other six become princesses.
