garden of the month

Most of us know Phyllis Stephens as the Inland Northwest's garden maven, but behind her incredible wealth of knowledge and advice is a wonderful garden and a very special garden partner: her husband, Jim. For 30 years, they have been working on a labor of love that turned a one-acre alfalfa field into a luscious series of garden rooms with views of Peone Prairie and Mount Spokane. Their efforts recently put them on the Spokane in Bloom Garden Tour. It also earned them the June Garden of the Month award from The Inland Empire Gardeners.

quality consignment finds

Say you're in the market for a sofa. A plush leather sofa perfect for that corner in the study, perhaps, or a comfy couch slip-covered with a nice washable fabric that will stand up to the family. Maybe the budget is too tight to allow shopping at traditional furniture stores. And the thought of making the rounds of garage sales makes you tired.

Rocks make poor mulch

I was going to wait until fall but as you requested questions here you go: Rather than bark, we decided to use small grey rocks as cover for our extensive flowerbeds. Now, everything I read says to mulch to protect the plants from freezing. How do I do that with the rocks? Irene Silverman, Spokane

Today’s project

Like an Adirondack chair or a lawn glider swing, a tree seat is an American classic that makes a charming (and useful) addition to any yard or garden. A great spot for outdoor entertaining during warm weather, a tree seat also adds a nice shady seat perfect for whiling away long, sunny afternoons. What you need

Vet’s prescription for disaster

Veterinarians have earned the love and trust of pet-loving kind, and for good reason. That's why nobody would ever expect to be the brunt of a veterinary practical joke. Now, in the spirit of the great shock-u-mentaries that are late-night cable favorites, I, veterinarian and insider, Dr. Marty Becker, am going to pull the wraps off veterinary medicine's heinous funny bone with a lampoon we call "give your cat this medicine at home."

YOUR BEAUTIFUL HOME

When Lee and Beverly Smick moved into a house with a view of the Grand Coulee Dam, they started with a landscape that was a blank canvas. Over the last 16 years they've painted a scenic vista.

Dave Daniel’s destiny is Japanese trees

Dave Daniel's fascination with Japanese maples began when he was a boy watching the construction of the Nishinomiya Japanese Garden at Manito Park right across the street from his house. As he watched the maples being planted in the garden, he knew that some day he would have to grow one for himself. More than 30 years later, Daniel has dozens of them planted in his shady backyard in Spokane Valley, and more for sale through his Wabi Sabi Japanese Gardens.

Dream garden

After living and gardening in this country, Canada and overseas, Pat Baillie's dream of a big, bountiful, garden couldn't thrive in Arizona's strong desert heat. So when her husband, Rusty, retired as an outdoor sports educator at an Arizona college, the couple moved north. Familiar with the region, the couple chose the Dalton Gardens area of North Idaho.

Gardens evoke tranquility

In a centuries-old tradition, Japanese garden style is an expression of the spirit of the natural world. The careful arrangement of stone, plants and water were traditionally supposed to represent the mountains, forests, lakes, streams and the sea of the Japanese home islands. The traditional practice of gardening in Japan evolved over many years and was often passed from one generation to the next. Gardening was, and is, an integral cornerstone of Japanese culture.

Lightweight aluminum coasters evoke midcentury style

After discovering yet another white circle on the table, caused by a child's forgotten water glass left behind on the dining-room table, I started looking around for coasters. As luck would have it, the next estate sale I went to produced a nearly complete set of 1950s aluminum coasters still in their original decorative holder. They're perfect.

Make treats your dog will love

I have a 16-year-old son, Lex, and when he brings a pack of friends home for an Xbox 360 party, they go crazy when my wife, Teresa, whips up a batch of peanut butter-chocolate chip cookies to fuel their gaming. My wife also likes to pamper her 2-year-old Papillon/poodle/yorkie mix-breed dog named Quixote. My wife jokingly (I think) calls him, "My No. 1 son." She loves to make little Quixote homemade cookies because she says, "I love it when my little man does that furry ballet on his back feet, with the tail helicopter rotor working for balance, and his dancing liquid eyes filled with love ... for me!"
