Diagnosed Former All-Star pitcher Curt Schilling has announced that he is battling cancer, according to a statement released on Wednesday through his employer, ESPN. The statement did not indicate what type of cancer Schilling has. Voided A person familiar with his decision told the AP that Vikings QB Matt Cassel will void the 2014 option on his contract and test the open market. Cassel’s decision leaves Christian Ponder as the Vikings’ only QB under contract. Cassel would have made $3.7 million next season.

In Brief: White pulls out of slopestyle

Winter Olympics: Shaun White is pulling out of the Olympic slopestyle contest in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia, to focus solely on winning a third straight gold medal on the halfpipe. White issued a statement to the “Today” show, saying that after much deliberation, he decided to concentrate on one event. The 27-year-old snowboarding star jammed his left wrist during slopestyle practice Tuesday and was among the several riders complaining about the unsafe conditions of the course.

Purchased A company tied to St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke purchased a prime 60-acre piece of land in Inglewood, Calif., amid speculation the NFL franchise is considering a return to the city it left for the Midwest nearly two decades ago. The Rams can break their 30-year lease in St. Louis after the 2014 season under a deal that requires their home stay among the top quarter of the 32 NFL stadiums.

Tennis: Li Na has advanced to her third Australian Open final and will have to beat Dominika Cibulkova to win her first title at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia. No. 4-seeded Li had a 6-2, 6-4 win over 19-year-old Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in the first semifinal Thursday before No. 20-seeded Cibulkova trounced 2012 Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 6-2.

Russian security looks for female suspects

SOCHI, Russia – Russian security officials are hunting down three potential female suicide bombers, one of whom is believed to be in Sochi, where the Winter Olympics will begin next month. Police leaflets seen by an Associated Press reporter at a central Sochi hotel on Tuesday contain warnings about three potential suicide bombers. A police letter said that one of them, Ruzanna Ibragimova, a 22-year-old widow of an Islamic militant, was at large in Sochi.

KEARNS, Utah – Short-track speedskating Olympic hopeful Chris Creveling was headed to the locker room after his time trial Thursday when he was spotted by eight-time Olympic medalist Apolo Ohno, now retired and providing commentary for NBC. “Great time trial, man. Feel good?” Ohno offered, patting him on the shoulder.

Miller, Sabres turn away Capitals in SO

NHL: If USA Hockey needed a reminder of how well Ryan Miller can play, the Buffalo Sabres goalie provided one. Playing three days before the U.S. Olympic hockey roster will be released, Miller made 49 saves to lead the Sabres to a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals in a six-round shootout on Sunday night in Buffalo, N.Y.

NBA: Steve Blake hit a 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds left to lift the Los Angeles Lakers to a 99-98 victory over Dwight Howard and the host Houston Rockets on Thursday night. Houston led by two points before Blake took the inbounds pass from Jodie Meeks and made the shot to win the game.
