Matt Santangelo to take over as Hoopfest executive director

Seeking a new leader for the world’s largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament, the Hoopfest Association Board of Directors turned to a blue blood of Spokane basketball: former Gonzaga star Matt Santangelo. Santangelo, 36, will eventually replace longtime executive director Rick Steltenpohl, who announced in February that he is stepping down to manage similar events elsewhere.

Area roundup: Gonzaga wins WCC baseball opener

Jimmy Sinatro hit a three-run double as part of Gonzaga’s five-run second inning and the Bulldogs held on to beat San Francisco 6-5 in a West Coast Conference baseball opener Friday at Benedetti Stadium in San Francisco. The win was GU’s first against the Dons (8-7) since April 9, 2010.
