Hoopfest director Rick Steltenpohl will step down after this year

Hoopfest executive director Rick Steltenpohl said Wednesday he will step down later this year after the basketball tournament’s 25th iteration. Along with Hoopfest events project manager Aaron Magner, Steltenpohl said he plans to found a nationwide company specializing in events like Spokane’s successful 3-on-3 tournament.

Cleaves, teammates end 12-year odyssey with Hoopfest elite title

It took 12 years but Nick Cleaves finally broke through the door. Cleaves, of San Francisco, combined with his California teammates to lead Ballerz By Law to the men’s 6-foot-and-under elite championship, 20-18 over Spokane-based ES Elite, under a scorching sun Sunday afternoon at the 24th Hoopfest.

Emotional win

Team TBA finally closed out Team Three and a Half, 20-15, to win its fourth straight Hoopfest Women’s Elite title Sunday afternoon. Finding closure was much tougher for both teams; they were playing for former player and friend Melissa Erickson, who died June 5.

Despite sporadic rain, athletes of all ages hit streets for Hoopfest

At age 89, first-time Hoopfest participant Jim Metzger chose to slip a pair of dress khakis over the athletic shorts donated by his teammates and grandchildren. “Old fogeys look bad enough just showing up,” he joked as he watched his family, decked in matching lime-green T-shirts bearing the team name Gesundheit, play their first game of the tournament Saturday morning.
