Washington State takes on free-falling Ducks

The Washington State men’s basketball team has struggled in the early part of Pac-12 play, but has a chance to collect a win today against Oregon, a program in flux. The Cougars have lost six of their last seven games while the Ducks come to Pullman riding a five-game losing streak. During coach Dana Altman’s four years the Ducks have found success with players who transferred from another school, and were able to quickly join with the players already on the roster to form a cohesive unit. But despite talented players such as UNLV’s Mike Moser and Houston’s Joseph Young joining the team, this year’s squad has struggled in Pac-12 play, particularly defensively.

Four corners: Washington State Cougars

COMING UP: Sunday vs. Oregon, 4 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks) OUTLOOK: It has been a bleak Pac-12 season for the Cougars thus far, with only a 49-46 win over Utah staving off the prospect of a winless conference slate. Without leading scorer DaVonte Lacy – out 2-4 more weeks with a rib injury – WSU ranks dead last in the Pac-12 in scoring at 63.4 points per game. Coach Ken Bone has gone away from his favored up-tempo offense in an effort to slow down the game and limit opponents’ possessions. He also said that the Cougars want to slow things down to save the legs of WSU’s best scorers, without whom the team often goes three or four minutes without a basket.

Making the best of it

SAN ANTONIO – Mack Brown didn’t want to go out like this, and No. 10 Oregon didn’t want its season to end here. That makes the Alamo Bowl tonight a finale for two programs making the best of disappointment: Texas (8-4) wanting a fond farewell for Brown after the tension surrounding his resignation, and the Ducks (10-2) denied a BCS bowl for the first time in five years.

Longtime Oregon defensive coordinator Aliotti retiring

SAN ANTONIO – Longtime Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti said Friday he will retire following next week’s game against Texas in the Alamo Bowl, revealing that he wanted to step away after last season but didn’t once Chip Kelly bolted for the NFL. Aliotti has spent 24 years with the Ducks, including 17 as defensive coordinator. After Oregon won the Fiesta Bowl last season, Aliotti said he was so certain that he coached his final game that he grabbed a chunk of turf from the field and stuffed it in a plastic bag, which remains in his briefcase.

Ducks find a way

EUGENE, Ore. – Marcus Mariota gave Josh Huff all the credit for the 12-yard touchdown pass with 29 seconds left that swung another Civil War rivalry game Oregon’s way. “Quite frankly, it was a bad throw,” Mariota said. “Huff made a great catch. I said, ‘Thank you man, that would’ve looked bad.’ ”

Ducks suspend two

Guard Dominic Artis and forward Ben Carter have each been suspended by the No. 19 Oregon men’s basketball team for the season’s first nine games for selling team apparel. The length of the suspension was announced Thursday, two days after the school revealed the NCAA violations. Artis and Carter did not accompany the team on its trip to South Korea for the Ducks’ opener against Georgetown today. Both must donate the value of the apparel to charity. Artis, a sophomore, averaged 8.5 points and 3.2 assists last season. Carter, also a sophomore, averaged 2.4 points and 2.3 rebounds. – Associated Press

Oregon, Stanford set for Pac-12’s game of the year

STANFORD, Calif. – The matchup between Oregon and Stanford the past three seasons has been billed as the biggest game of the year on the West Coast, a de facto Pac-12 title game and national semifinal. What it also has been is a spoiler.
