Gonzaga rallies, tops Dons

Gonzaga scored twice in the ninth inning to rally for a 6-4 West Coast Conference baseball victory in the series finale with host San Francisco on Sunday. Jason Chatwood drove in the game-winning run on a squeeze bunt with runners on first and third. Another run came across later in the inning on an error.

Zags complete torrid homestand

Anthony Synegal ripped three hits, including a double and run-scoring single in the sixth inning, to help Gonzaga University close out its successful nine-game homestand with a 3-2 non-conference baseball win over Utah at Washington Trust Field on Wednesday afternoon. Synegal accounted for half of GU’s hits as the Bulldogs (15-6) avenged Tuesday night’s 16-9 loss to the Utes (9-12) to finish 8-1 in their extended homestand.

1999 Zags pulling for 2009 squad

The model – perhaps the broken mold – for the athletically invidious is the 1972 Miami Dolphins, what with their annual toast to one another when the last unbeaten NFL team falls. Presumably even if it’s the Miami Dolphins. That the 1999 Gonzaga Bulldogs are not a reduced-to-scale version of such silliness is somehow reassuring, not that it would be expected.

Gonzaga’s Mark Castellitto stroked a walk-off run-scoring single to cap a five-run ninth inning Saturday as the host Bulldogs knocked off visiting University of Pacific 9-8 in a non-conference college baseball game at Washington Trust Field. GU (13-5) was trailing 8-3 after seven innings but scored a single run in the eighth and exploded for five more in the ninth. The Zags sent eight batters to the plate and got RBI hits from Drew Heid, Tyson Van Winkle and Anthony Synegal, as well as Costelitto. The win was the seventh straight for the Bulldogs.

Similar schools, big difference

Xavier and Gonzaga are similar at first glance, Jesuit schools of about 7,000 students that have good basketball teams. It just seems like Xavier, Gonzaga’s opponent in the first round of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament Saturday night in Seattle, is bigger.

GU helps WSU open home schedule today

Washington State will get another early jump on the home portion of its 2009 schedule this afternoon when it entertains Gonzaga in a 5:30 p.m. non-conference game at Bailey-Brayton Field. The weather will be raw and the competition challenging, but Cougars coach Donnie Marbut is happy to be back in Pullman to kick off a six-game homestand after opening the season with three straight road losses to 22nd-ranked Arkansas.
