Gonzaga roughs up Dons
Ryan Wiegand and Drew Heid each had three hits and two RBIs as part of Gonzaga’s 13-hit outburst in a 10-1 non-conference win over the University of San Francisco at the Palm Springs (Calif.) Classic on Sunday.
Bulldogs starter Steven Ames (3-0) earned the win, allowing one unearned run over six innings. Three Gonzaga (7-5) pitchers didn’t allow a walk and struck out nine Dons.
The Bulldogs had scored one run over the previous 18 innings before erupting against 11 San Francisco pitchers.
•Five Washington State errors led to four unearned runs in the Cougars’ 7-3 loss to Notre Dame at the Academy Sports + Outdoors Rice Classic in Houston.
Two of the errors occurred in the third inning, when the Fighting Irish (5-4) scored three times to take a 4-0 lead.
The Cougars (3-8) scored on Alex Burg’s two-run triple in the sixth and Derek Jones’ sacrifice fly in the eighth.
WSU’s Patrick Claussen had the first three-hit game of his career and has hit safely in all seven games he’s played this season.
•Whitworth (3-7, 1-4 NWC) was swept in a Northwest Conference doubleheader against Linfield in McMinnville, Ore., losing 6-5 in the first game and 11-1 in the nightcap.
Dan Belet was 3 for 5 with three RBIs in the opener for the Pirates, and Mitch Ramsay added two RBIs in the first game and drove in Whitworth’s lone run in the second game.
Softball
Community Colleges of Spokane (6-0) won two games Sunday, beating South Puget Sound 13-5 and Yakima 16-1 at Yakima in a two-day, six-team tournament.
Heather Jackson (Shadle Park High) had seven hits, including five doubles, on the day, and Michelle Wells (University High) hit a three-run home run and had two doubles Sunday.
