Walker could sit soon

Taijuan Walker’s season could be nearing its end. He is scheduled to start the series opener when the Mariners play the Los Angeles Angels tonight, but how many starts he’ll make beyond that is up in the air. Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said they could probably pitch Walker up to 185 innings for the season. He’s currently at 162 2/3 innings.

Mariners notes: Mark Trumbo has settled in since July 4

SEATTLE – Mark Trumbo’s career-best hitting streak ended at 12 games Friday when he went 0 for 3 with a walk in the Mariners’ 4-2 loss to Colorado. So let’s check his numbers. Trumbo went 18 for 48 in his streak, with four homers and 11 RBIs. It was just a continuation of a surge that began more than two months ago. Trumbo is batting .313 in 55 games since July 4.

Mariners come up short in loss to Rockies

SEATTLE – Hisashi Iwakuma blinked first Friday night in his pitchers’ duel with Colorado right-hander Chad Bettis. And Iwakuma blinked hard. The Rockies strung together five straight one-out hits against Iwakuma in the seventh inning, including a three-run homer by Dustin Garneau, and held on for a 4-2 victory over the Mariners at Safeco Field.

Hernandez, Cruz lead M’s in win over Texas

SEATTLE – This 5-0 victory over Texas was almost bittersweet for the Mariners because it points to what might have been. Felix Hernandez pitched eight dominant innings, and Nelson Cruz hit his 40th homer in a glorious Thursday matinee at Safeco Field. It was tight, crisp and clean.

Mariners can’t dig out of early hole in 9-6 loss to Rangers

SEATTLE – Twice in August, the Mariners erased multi-run deficits against Cole Hamels, Texas’ marquee trade-deadline acquisition. A third trip to the well Tuesday night came up just short. The Rangers battered Taijuan Walker for three early home runs in a 9-6 victory at Safeco Field that further dimmed any hopes the Mariners had of mounting a September charge after their recent five-game winning streak.

MLB announces 2016 schedule: Mariners open April 4 at Texas

SEATTLE – If there’s one scheduling constant in Major League Baseball, it’s the Mariners will log more miles than any other club. A lot more, in fact, than nearly all other clubs. MLB released its 2016 schedule Tuesday morning for all 30 clubs and, yep, the Mariners will again be mileage kings at an estimated 48,811 miles. The Los Angeles Angels rank second at 44,729, followed by Oakland at 42,694.

Seattle Mariners self-destruct in first inning of 3-0 loss to Rangers

SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners had a rare chance to unload on Texas starter Yovani Gallardo in the first inning, but sloppy baserunning spoiled their threat. Adrian Beltre’s two-run, bases-loaded single in the sixth inning put the Rangers ahead, and Seattle never recovered in a 3-0 loss Monday, ending the Mariners’ season-high five-game win streak.

Mariners sweep Oakland for season-high fifth straight win

OAKLAND, Calif. – Here we are, in the season’s final month, and, finally, the Mariners are on a roll. Their 3-2 victory on Sunday completed a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics. It also stretched their winning streak to a season-best five games and, if you still want to believe, pulled them to within six games of Texas in the American League wild-card chase.
