Grip on Sports: Forget wild card for the Mariners! How about a crown?

Friday: On Aug. 14, 1995, the Mariners were 11 1/2 games out of first place in the American League West, sitting in third behind the high-flying Angels and the Texas Rangers. We all know what happened. After yesterday’s games, the M’s found themselves in third place, 7 1/2 games behind in the West, trailing Oakland and the Angels, in that order.

Hernandez, Seattle lose 4-2 to Detroit

DETROIT – It was bound to happen at some point, but this isn’t how the Mariners wanted either streak to come to an end. Felix Hernandez had his major league record streak of starts with seven innings pitched and two runs or fewer allowed come to an end at 16. Seattle’s five-game winning streak also was snapped in the process.

Hernandez, Price in stellar matchup

DETROIT – Over the course of a 162-game season, the games and stars align to provide great pitching matchups. With teams setting up their rotations similarly, the chances that teams’ respective No. 1 starters will meet up throughout the season increases, giving fans an added treat. But today, the pitching matchup at Comerica Park will be something better than great when Felix Hernandez squares off with left-hander David Price.

Mariners take down Tigers

DETROIT – Perhaps every series should be labeled as the “biggest” or “most important” of the season. Because the Mariners seem to be thriving as the pressure of the push for a postseason berth grows with each passing day. On Friday, Seattle kicked off a key three-game showdown with the Detroit Tigers, who came in half a game ahead of them in the race for the second wild-card position.

Seattle’s arms trending toward record season

SEATTLE – This is how good Felix Hernandez has pitched in making himself the clear leader for a second Cy Young award. The ace of the Seattle Mariners has set the pace for a pitching staff that’s on a record pace not seen from an American League team in 40 years and is the reason that Seattle is playing meaningful baseball in August for the first time in seven years.

Kendrys Morales, Hisashi Iwakuma help Mariners beat Blue Jays

SEATTLE – It was billed as the Mariners’ biggest series of the season, the likes of which this part of the country hadn’t seen in years. If that was the case – if the Mariners’ three-game series against fellow wild-card contender Toronto brought on the first signs of playoff fever in Seattle – the Mariners answered the call with some of their best baseball of the season.

Young’s strong outing leads M’s to win over Blue Jays

SEATTLE – Chris Young showed up to spring training as a 6-foot-10 mystery. His track record showed two divergent pasts: On the one hand, Young was once an All-Star starting pitcher. On the other, he hadn’t pitched more than 100 innings in a season in four years and missed all of the 2012 season because of injuries.

Sweet 16

SEATTLE – For all that Felix Hernandez has done in his career, pitching meaningful games in the final two months of the season has been a rarity. With Seattle in the thick of the wild-card chase in the American League, Hernandez got the Mariners most anticipated home series since 2007 off to an electric start on Monday night.
