Chris Young efficient in Mariners win over Royals

SEATTLE – Chris Young isn’t prone to self-praise. Even after a good start, the Seattle Mariners right-hander is more comfortable giving credit to anyone but himself. Young had another opportunity to act the consummate teammate after pitching eight efficient innings Saturday night to lead the Mariners to a 3-1 win over the Kansas City Royals.

Rookie Jones impresses Cano

SEATTLE – Mariners rookie James Jones didn’t have to do much to earn some praise from veteran teammate Robinson Cano the other day. Jones, the 25-year-old outfielder making his sixth appearance in the Mariners No. 99 uniform Thursday night, came off the bench and delivered a seventh-inning sacrifice bunt against the Royals. After the game, Cano approached Jones and offered encouragement.

Vargas shuts down Mariners

SEATTLE – Jason Vargas allowed three hits over seven innings and the Kansas Royals had 16 hits – all singles – in a 6-1 win over the Mariners Friday night. Vargas (3-1), who pitched for the Mariners for four seasons (2009-12), struck out six without a walk. He is 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA in four career starts against his former team.

Hisashi Iwakuma pitches Mariners to win over Royals

SEATTLE – Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma added to his dominant streak against the A.L. Central. The All-Star right-hander struck out seven and walked none in eight innings to run his scoreless streak against division teams to 48 2/3 innings in the Mariners’ 1-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night.

Really big rally for M’s farm team

BURLINGTON, Iowa – A minor league team of the Seattle Mariners has pulled off a major rally, coming back from a 16-run deficit to win in the Class A Midwest League. The Clinton LumberKings trailed the Burlington Bees 17-1 after five innings Wednesday night in the game between clubs based in Iowa. Clinton wound up winning 20-17 in 12 innings.

Mariners end strong trip with DH split vs. A’s

OAKLAND, Calif. – Even a lackluster finish couldn’t damper what was a successful road trip for the Seattle Mariners. Fill-in starter Drew Pomeranz shut out Seattle for five innings and the Mariners managed just three hits while losing the nightcap of a doubleheader 2-0 to the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.

Roenis Elias wins second straight as Mariners beat A’s

OAKLAND, Calif. – Rookie Roenis Elias struck out six while pitching into the seventh to win consecutive starts for the first time, Justin Smoak drove in three runs and the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 8-3 on Tuesday night for their season-best fourth straight victory. Smoak hit an RBI double and Dustin Ackley an RBI single in the first to back Elias (3-2), who followed up a 10-strikeout gem at Yankee Stadium his last time out with another impressive start.
