Jesus Montero helps Mariners beat White Sox split-squad 7-4

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Jesus Montero had two singles and an RBI and Scott Baker continued to make a good impression in his bid for winning a rotation spot Thursday as the Seattle Mariners beat a Chicago White Sox split-squad 7-4. Montero’s second hit came in the seventh to cap the Mariners’ three-run, go-ahead rally. Baker allowed one earned run in his second spring start with hopes of making the rotation. He allowed three hits and no walks.

MLB tests new replay in Twins-Jays game

Standing at first base, Chris Rahl realized he was probably destined to become the answer to a trivia question. “It’s kind of funny. I was thinking, ‘Is this the first one?’ ” the Minnesota runner said Monday.

MLB notes: M’s to shut down Taijuan Walker for a week

Taijuan Walker’s ascension to a spot in the Seattle Mariners rotation is on hold. The Mariners shut down their top pitching prospect for at least one week on Friday after exams revealed inflammation in the bursa of his right shoulder. Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said the decision was made after Walker flew to Los Angeles to get a second opinion on the sore shoulder that has limited him during spring training.

New Mariner Cano hopes to lead by patience and success

PEORIA, Ariz. – The spirited applause hadn’t quite died down at Peoria Stadium when Robinson Cano gave them a reason to cheer again, with a little more enthusiasm. Pressure on Mariners

It’s a little harsh to say “never mind” to the debut season of Robinson Cano as a Seattle Mariner. But the pressure on him in 2014 is far less than on general manager Jack Zduriencik and his previous hires. He’s the guy who convinced CEO Howard Lincoln to walk from the major leagues’ kiddy pool to the adult swim party by saying the rest of the team is ready.

Grip on sports: There’s already a plan in place

Wednesday: So what does the future hold in Pullman? That’s the $1.7-million question, isn’t it? What is basketball coach Ken Bone’s future? Though just about every WSU fan you chat with sees this as Bone’s final year, athletic director Bill Moos won’t make a pronouncement either way.

Montero hit buffet, so M’s drop expectations

PEORIA, Ariz. – Jesus Montero has become the forgotten prospect. Once considered part of the foundation of future success, he’s now a reclamation project. To many around baseball, he’s inching closer to becoming yet another cautionary tale of a talented player filled with potential who is unaware he’s squandering it.

Mariners’ Walker, Paxton under pressure to join rotation

PEORIA, Ariz. – It’s everything they’ve worked for or thought about since baseball became something more than just a game to play with their friends. It’s just 60 feet, 6 inches from their grasp, reliant on their ability to fire a baseball from that distance. It’s a goal fans want, and the Seattle Mariners need them to achieve. For Taijuan Walker and James Paxton, a place in the opening day rotation is there for them to take.
