Mariners fail to capitalize on scoring opportunities in loss

ARLINGTON, Texas – It was a game that slipped away from Seattle with suddenness in a nightmarish seventh inning, after the latest in a long line of Raul Ibanez heroics put them in prime position to win. Yet the Mariners’ 5-4 loss to the Rangers on Thursday night, which had an all-too-familiar ring to it, was dictated by events long before the fateful seventh.

M’s Ibanez has hope despite another loss

SEATTLE – Raul Ibanez believes there’s some second-half hope for his Mariners despite mounting evidence to the contrary. The Seattle Mariners limped through the halfway mark in their schedule over the weekend, culminating with a 7-6 loss on Sunday to the Chicago Cubs. Ibanez hit his 19th home run of the season in the losing effort, though his team again waited until the final few innings to show signs of offensive life.

Mariners fall to Cubs in 11 innings

SEATTLE – Jason Bay owned his mistake from the get-go, knowing a veteran pinch-runner can’t lean too far off first base with the game on the line. In the end, the part that kept haunting the Mariners wasn’t that eighth-inning play in which Bay broke from first base too quickly and was an easy out at second. Instead, one of the more bizarre moments of this 5-3 loss in 11 innings to the Chicago Cubs on Saturday was caused just by having Bay pinch-run for designated hitter Kendrys Morales in the first place.

Zunino gives Mariners 5-4 win with single in 10th

SEATTLE – Mike Zunino hit a game-ending single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Seattle Mariners to a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Friday night. Michael Saunders and Raul Ibanez led off the 10th with back-to-back walks before Blake Parker (0-1) was relieved by Shawn Camp. Jason Bay advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, and Justin Smoak was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Zunino then worked the count full before singling up the middle.
