Tigers hold off Mariners in 14 innings

SEATTLE – Detroit catcher Brayan Pena held onto Prince Fielder’s relay throw and absorbed a collision with Justin Smoak at home plate for the final out, and the Tigers outlasted the Seattle Mariners 2-1 in 14 innings Wednesday night. Smoak singled with one out off Joaquin Benoit, and with two outs Dustin Ackley doubled into the right-field corner. Third-base coach Jeff Datz didn’t hesitate in waiving Smoak around with the potential tying run. The relay from the outfield was up the third-base line a bit, but Pena caught it in plenty of time and held onto the ball during the collision.

M’s, Zunino just biding their time

Catcher Mike Zunino has lived life on the fast track from the moment he signed with the Seattle Mariners last July. Never has there been a doubt where he’s headed; the only mystery has been when he’s going to get there. With Zunino in Tacoma, one stop away from the majors, that question is becoming ever more prominent – particularly since he has started his Triple-A career with a vengeance: four home runs and 18 runs batted in during his first seven games.

Maurer backs up Mariners’ good faith

SEATTLE – Brandon Maurer shook the nerves, went back to relying on his primary pitches and finally displayed why the Seattle Mariners felt the 22-year-old was ready to make the jump from Double-A to the majors. The result was a celebratory shower that left the rookie shivering.

Mariners win, split series

SEATTLE - Dustin Ackley snapped a sixth-inning tie with his first RBI of the season, rookie Brandon Maurer rebounded from a horrible start to throw six strong innings for his first career victory and the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 4-3 on Sunday.

Mariners missing offense in loss to Rangers

SEATTLE – If Justin Smoak had to do it all over again, he’d simply catch the ball this time. But if Brendan Ryan had done that a few batters earlier, Smoak and the Mariners would not have been in the position of having to make split-second decisions to prevent the tying run from scoring. A depleted offensive attack in this 3-1 loss to the Texas Rangers on Saturday night had the Mariners in the postgame position of second-guessing just about everything they did at the plate and in the field.

Offense falters as Mariners fall to Rangers

Joe Saunders didn’t think he was throwing that well when he took the mound Saturday night against Texas. Judging from the Rangers’ offense, he had great stuff. Saunders allowed one run and three hits in seven innings but the Seattle Mariners couldn’t hold on.

Mariners snap skid with win over Rangers

Through the first couple weeks of the season, Hisashi Iwakuma has been the most impressive part of Seattle’s starting staff. Iwakuma pitched 6 2-3 solid innings and got the better of countryman Yu Darvish as the Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 3-1 on Friday night to end a three-game losing streak.
