All about angle

PEORIA, Ariz. – Mariners pitcher Blake Beavan isn’t beyond working an angle when it comes to keeping his job at the back of the starting rotation. In this case, the angle is downward. Beavan, 24, spent a month this winter training under renowned University of Texas pitching coach Skip Johnson trying to develop a downward plane to his pitches.

In brief: M’s turn back time, beat Padres

Baseball: Raul Ibanez hit a three-run homer off former teammate Freddy Garcia to spark a five-run first-inning and lead the Seattle Mariners to an 8-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday in Peoria, Ariz. Garcia and Ibanez were twice teammates in Seattle and played together last season for the New York Yankees.

Vasquez full of optimism after ordeal

PEORIA, Ariz. – Anthony Vasquez had no regrets as the Seattle Mariners kicked off another Cactus League without him. The left-handed starter, who got a brief, harsh lesson about life in the majors when he debuted with Seattle late in 2011, has since learned what real problems are all about. Vasquez, 26, nearly died here last November while training at the Mariners’ facility when some headaches and vision problems turned out to be from a ruptured blood vessel in his brain.

Saunders pens new chapter with Bard

PEORIA, Ariz. – First it was rubber bands and an oversized bat; now a “swimming pool noodle” is helping Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders maintain his newfound hitting career. It was just over a year ago that Saunders, 26, rescued his baseball fortunes through a rather unorthodox training regimen designed by private hitting instructor Mike Bard. But after a solid 2012 season as a regular, Saunders returned to Bard’s training facility in Colorado this winter and added the polyethylene foam noodle – typically used as a pool float by children – to the quirky kit of tools designed to keep his swing compact.

M’s hope for pop from bulked-up Morse

When Michael Morse was last in the Seattle Mariners’ clubhouse at the Peoria (Ariz.) Sports Complex, he was still in the “be seen, not heard” portion of his career. He had undeniable tools, and the sort of long, sleek physique that appeals to scouts. But Morse was still feeling his way around and wondering if, or when, his opportunity would come.

Ackley looks to put tough 2012 behind him

PEORIA, Ariz. – For Dustin Ackley, this is brand-new territory. He has always been the prodigy, the hitting machine. He was the one who routinely caused teammates and opponents alike to marvel at his consistency, his approach, his stroke. Dustin Ackley is used to being the best hitter on his team, not the one flailing to figure out why he can’t get on track, no matter what or how hard he tries.

Saunders feels at home with Mariners

PEORIA, Ariz. – The Seattle Mariners could use an experienced No. 2 or 3 starter in the rotation that is headlined by Felix Hernandez, and left-hander Joe Saunders hopes to be that dependable arm. Saunders agreed on a one-year contract with the Mariners on Tuesday that could be worth up to $16.5 million over two years if he reaches all his bonuses, and he got right to work Wednesday.

Felix draws focus at M’s camp

SEATTLE – When the Seattle Mariners report for spring training today, they’ll immediately start trying to answer whether their starting rotation has enough depth and how they will shuffle a glut of players between left field, first base and designated hitter. And why, exactly, there was a delay in an expected new contract for ace Felix Hernandez.
