Mariners’ Tuiasosopo shows adaptability

SEATTLE – Matt Tuiasosopo showed up at the Mariners’ spring training camp six months ago with a half-dozen gloves – some for infield, some for outfield and one for first base – and a mission to use all of them this season. Saturday, his versatility came in handy when manager Daren Brown had to juggle his lineup because center fielder Franklin Gutierrez came down with an upset stomach.

Mariners’ Fister pounded in matchup with Cleveland

SEATTLE – Doug Fister had no time to regain his footing. Disaster struck so quickly and severely for the Mariners pitcher in a 6-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night that Fister looked almost relieved to be taken out of the game. Fister was 32 pitches into that inning when manager Daren Brown mercifully pulled the plug, having watched his starter yield four runs and hits to six of the seven batters he faced.

Shin-Soo Choo drove in five runs with a bases-loaded double and a two-run home run to give the Cleveland Indians a 6-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night.

Matsui rocks Mariners with two-run homer for Angels

SEATTLE – Hideki Matsui hit a two-out, two-run homer in the seventh inning, barely eluding the glove of Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki, and the Los Angeles Angels rallied for a 4-2 win over the Mariners on Wednesday. Held to just two hits entering the seventh by Seattle starter Jason Vargas, the Angels got started with Mike Napoli’s leadoff double. Two outs later, Matsui jumped on an 0-1 fastball and got just enough for his 18th homer of the season. Suzuki climbed the right field fence, but couldn’t pull back Matsui’s drive.

Mariners’ rally came after ace left game in 7th

SEATTLE – Seven innings through his latest scoreless duel and Felix Hernandez was done for the night. There were times this season when it would have been unthinkable to pull Hernandez at 103 pitches heading into the eighth inning, but those days, apparently, are long gone. Hernandez lowered his earned-run average to 2.38 Tuesday night but did not factor in the decision of a game his team came back to win, 3-1, over the Los Angeles Angels with three eighth-inning runs.

SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners had waited nearly three games for the big hit that would make the difference between losing and winning. What Adam Moore delivered in the seventh inning Sunday was more like the shot heard ’round the infield, but it worked in the Mariners’ 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Moore came to the plate with the score tied, runners on first and third and one out in the seventh, and getting that much-needed big hit clearly was on his mind. “I was looking to drive the ball somewhere in the gap,” he said. He accomplished the same thing with a soft grounder to shortstop that scored the go-ahead run to complete a two-run Mariners rally.
