M’s Aardsma no longer a ‘nobody’

PEORIA, Ariz. – Yes, it’s been a good year for David Aardsma. It didn’t start off so grand. The former No. 1 draft pick arrived in Seattle’s 2009 camp as a castoff middle reliever, basically given away by the Boston Red Sox in a trade for a Class A pitcher.

Bedard takes baby step

PEORIA, Ariz. – Erik Bedard is back on a mound for the Mariners – albeit at less than half speed. It’s still better than the idling and rehabilitation he’s been doing the last seven months.

Cubs blank M’s

PEORIA, Ariz. – Ryan Dempster put a little regular-season pressure on himself: bases loaded, no outs. Then came a dominant sequence the Cubs hope their No. 2 starter duplicates when the games get real beginning next week.

Mariners modify Bedard’s rehab program

PEORIA, Ariz. – The Seattle Mariners aren’t calling it a setback, but pitcher Erik Bedard won’t throw from a mound today as planned. Bedard, whose progress from shoulder surgery last August has been impressive, has developed some stiffness in his left arm, manager Don Wakamatsu said.

M’s, Figgins pound Angels

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Seattle Mariners pounded Jered Weaver for eight hits and six runs – five earned – over 4 1/3 innings in a 12-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Weaver, expected to be the Angels’ opening day starter, had his second consecutive subpar outing. He walked five San Diego hitters in 3 1/3 innings his last time out. Against the Mariners, he walked none and struck out three.

M’s Hernandez dominates Diamondbacks

PEORIA, Ariz. – Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu called a rare spring training team meeting before Saturday’s game with Arizona. The reason? The Mariners had lost six games in a row and looked bad doing it. The timing? Felix Hernandez was on the mound for the Mariners.

M’s Lee could miss opening day

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Seattle Mariners fan Jeff Honnald was on a plane back to Seattle on Friday after a week of watching his team in spring training when he was greeted by an unusual sight. Seated just two rows in front of him, in coach class no less, was none other than Mariners pitcher Cliff Lee. Honnald did a double-take, glanced at a poster of Lee he had with him just to be sure it was the right guy, then began asking himself the usual questions.

Figgins fits in comfortably with M’s

PEORIA, Ariz. – Chone Figgins is a fan of the familiar. It’s one reason he decided on Seattle as a free-agent destination after leaving the Angels –same division, time zone, pitchers and cities on the road. Even the coaching staff had several familiar faces from his days in Anaheim.

M’s Lee ejected for throwing at a batter

TUCSON, Ariz. – Seattle ace Cliff Lee was ejected from a spring training game Monday against Arizona for throwing at Diamondbacks catcher Chris Snyder. Afterward, Diamondbacks third baseman Mark Reynolds called Lee’s actions “bush league.”

Sports in brief: Milton Bradley’s games irk Cubs

Baseball: Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry says Milton Bradley should stop blaming the team, manager and fans for his failure to produce during his tumultuous season in Chicago. “I think it’s time maybe Milton looked himself in the mirror,” an agitated Hendry said Wednesday in response to Bradley’s latest charges that he was mistreated by the Cubs.

M’s face a happier Putz

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The J.J. Putz who last year questioned the chemistry of the Mariners’ clubhouse in 2008, and last month was quoted as questioning the handling of his injured elbow by the New York Mets in 2009, was nowhere to be found Monday. Instead, after he made his first appearance against the Mariners since being traded from Seattle in December 2008, Putz sounded happy and relaxed. That’s in part because he again feels at home, in the familiar confines of the American League and with a team, the Chicago White Sox, that trains near his Arizona residence.
