Over the past two winters, the Mariners have not been a major player in MLB free agency.

It has been several days since this Mariners season came to another disappointing end, and relief doesn’t appear to be on its way. Mathematics tricked fans into thinking Seattle was in contention through the end of September, but this season was lost weeks ago.

A year ago, Seattle Mariners chairman John Stanton promised that player payroll would increase for the 2024 season. And it did … on the margins.

SEATTLE – This much can be said about the Seattle Mariners as they play out the final series of the 2024 season – a three-game series with a team that is soon to be formerly known as the Oakland A’s – they are playing with the effort of a team still fighting to make the playoffs.

SEATTLE – A team that once led the division by 10 games and was eliminated from postseason consideration 24 hours earlier welcomed a team that had just said goodbye to its home of 59 seasons for the final three games without consequence to end the 2024 season.
