In one corner of an open conference room inside T-Mobile Park, Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto was asked Thursday morning for one word to describe a season that had ended in such agonizing fashion Monday night in Toronto.

At 8:33 p.m. Monday, minutes after his season sank below the waves, Bryan Woo was asked how he would describe the legacy of the 2025 Mariners. Before he could answer, a scream rang through the quiet clubhouse, as an unknown teammate in an adjoining room summarized Seattle’s sorrow.

Tyler Thompson dreamed of working in baseball.
