Time for Shock home game changed because of parade

The kickoff time for the Spokane Shock-San Jose SaberCats Arena Football League game on May 16 has been changed from 7 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Arena. The game was changed in consideration of the Spokane Lilac Festival parade and events later that same evening.

Lia Galdeira scores 29 for WSU, but WSU women fall 57-54 at Cal

Mikayla Cowling scored 15 points and Brittany Boyd hit two free throws with 12 seconds left as California held off Washington State 57-54 in Pac-12 women’s basketball Monday night in Berkeley, California. Gabby Green missed the front end of a one-and-one with 14 seconds left, but Cal grabbed the offensive rebound and Boyd was fouled. Boyd’s two free throws gave Cal a three-point lead.

Reardan product Kelsey Moos helps lead Arizona State women past WSU

Katie Hempen hit four 3-pointers and all seven of her free throws for a career-high 21 points, leading No. 18 Arizona State to its ninth-straight win as the Sun Devils beat Washington State 78-64 in Pac-12 women’s basketball action on Monday night in Tempe, Arizona. Kelsey Moos (Reardan) and Sophie Brunner each added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Sun Devils (13-1, 2-0 Pac-12).

William Mulder returns to Shock as defensive backs coach

William Mulder will be returning to the Spokane Shock as defensive backs coach for the 2015 season. Mulder was a defensive backs assistant with the Shock in 2013 before becoming Portland’s defensive coordinator in 2014. In his one season with Portland, Mulder led the Thunder to the fourth-best pass defense in the Arena Football League.

Area roundup: Terrance Sanders bolts Spokane for Jacksonville

Terrance Sanders, a standout defensive back and kick returner for the Spokane Shock the last four seasons, has agreed to a two-year contract with the Jacksonville Sharks. Sanders is the Shock’s second key loss in Arena Football League free agency. Quarterback Erik Meyer signed with San Jose last Friday.

Bulldog, Vandal collect POW honors

Volleyball: Savannah Blinn, a Gonzaga junior outside hitter from Lewiston, was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for the third time in her career. As GU beat Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount on the same weekend for the first time in history, Blinn totalled 46 kills with a .379 hitting percentage and eight blocks.

Spokane acquires forward from P.A.

The Spokane Chiefs added experience Monday in a trade with the Prince Albert Raiders for 20-year-old forward Calder Brooks. In exchange for Brooks, who has 26 goals and 42 assists in 144 Western Hockey League games with Prince Albert (37) and Calgary (107), the Chiefs gave up a fifth-round pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.

Spokane Shock exercise options on 14 rookies

With Wednesday marking the opening of Arena Football League free agency, the Spokane Shock exercised rookie options to keep 2014 first-year players on their roster for the upcoming season. This offseason marks the end of the first group of two-year contracts available to veterans, meaning a majority of the league’s veterans are expected to become free agents.

In brief: Shock’s James Ruffin selected AFL Defensive Lineman of the Year

AFL: The Arena Football League announced Spokane Shock defensive end James Ruffin as the 2014 Defensive Lineman of the Year on Tuesday. Ruffin, a first team All-Arena selection, collected 38 1/2 tackles on the season and led the league with a Shock franchise-record 14 sacks in 2014. He also became Spokane’s all-time leader in sacks during the 2014 season, reaching 26 over his three-year career.
