S-R marketing chief will retire

Shaun O’L. Higgins, longtime sales and marketing director for The Spokesman-Review, announced Tuesday that he’ll retire from the company in early January. Higgins, 62, who also gave popular economic forecasts for 25 years, plans to stay in Spokane and focus on other business interests, he said.

WSU eyed for hotel, convention center

A hotel and convention center could be built on the Washington State University campus in Pullman if negotiations between a California developer and the university are successful. WSU’s board of regents approved a plan Friday to begin negotiations with Sonnenblick-Del Rio Development for the sale of 7.5 acres of WSU property, according to a news release. The Brentwood, Calif., company wants to build a 125-room Hilton hotel and 10,000- to 12,000-square-foot convention center on the site, which is at the northeast end of campus, east of the Student Recreation Center.

Spokane Valley business vacancy rates rise as city struggles to develop a growth plan

‘For lease” signs dot both sides of East Sprague Avenue in Spokane Valley like dandelions springing from the sidewalks. The former National Golf store has been empty for more than two years. The old China King Buffet across the street is vacant and for sale. KFC recently closed one of its two stores on the business strip. The former Old European Breakfast House, Jo-Ann fabrics, Complete Suite Furniture and Albertsons locations – all empty.

An Eagle, Idaho, man was cited by the Idaho Fish and Game department this week for poaching after he shot a wolf outside an approved hunting zone.

Vandals left receipt for their “ammo” behind

Vandals who egged a Colfax car dealership early Wednesday morning left a note at the scene decrying “the ignorant use of fossil fuels” – a note written on the back of a Winco receipt for 5 dozen eggs. Investigators were able to track down the suspects by reviewing video footage from the grocery store.

Outlook stable for region

The mortgage crisis that's creating waves of foreclosures and tighter access to credit nationwide will affect the local economy, but don't look for an Inland Northwest recession in 2008, economic forecaster Shaun O'L. Higgins told an audience in Spokane Valley on Wednesday morning. "We're going to continue to see growth and we're still on a positive pattern," Higgins said in a presentation at the Greater Valley Economic Outlook Conference. Higgins is director of sales and marketing for The Spokesman-Review and a longtime local economy-watcher.

Realtors group wins lawsuit

The Spokane Association of Realtors won a lawsuit brought by three of its members, who wanted access to the organization's database of for-sale properties without paying for membership in the future. The lawsuit, filed in mid-2004, was dismissed by U.S. District Court Judge Lonny Suko in a summary judgment filed Friday.

Jordan Schenk doesn't own any stocks. The Washington State University student finds himself a bit short of funds for playing the market, what with tuition and all. But The Spokesman-Review is giving Schenk and other students the chance to test their investing prowess in a new stock-picking contest. Schenk's team from Washington State University will face off against a team from the University of Idaho that's captained by Faere Coats.
