Lake City Students To Learn Block By Block Teachers Praise Scheduling Plan’s Ability To Increase Depth Of Learning

Lake City High School teachers overwhelmingly support a new schedule they say would boost instruction time and increase the number of courses students can take over four years. The block schedule - which lengthens the school day by five minutes - would enroll students in four, 88-minute classes one day, alternating to a different four the following day. Students would have one 30-minute lunch break and would take eight classes per semester, compared to six now.

Merger Promises Boost In Mental Health Care Hospitals’ Joint Venture Gives North Idaho More Psychiatric Services

A merger between Kootenai Medical Center and the Inland Behavioral Health Institute will mean expanded psychiatric services for North Idaho residents, officials said Thursday. KMC bought out the institute, formerly Pine Crest Hospital, for $557,000, to create a jointly owned $3.8 million company. The new company, North Idaho Behavioral Health, will be owned 50 percent by KMC and 50 percent by IBHI's two owners, Jack Yuditsky and Mike Cancelosi. A four-person board of directors will oversee the new company, which is KMC's sixth joint venture. Most recently, KMC joined with Sacred Heart to construct a new dialysis facility.

Committee Rejects Plan To Link School Boundaries

The Middle School Boundary Committee said Wednesday it will not support an alternate proposal presented by two patrons at the last school board meeting. The alternate plan tied middle school boundaries to elementary school boundaries rather than using geographic lines.

Lakeland Will Add Classrooms

The Lakeland Board of Trustees voted Monday night to spend $1.4 million on new classrooms, remodeling and computer purchases. To accommodate significant growth in Athol and Spirit Lake, Athol Elementary will receive four classrooms, remodeling for a Chapter One room and a new computer lab.

King Holiday Brings Human Rights Events

The Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations will host three human rights events in the coming week to recognize the national Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The task force will join with the North Idaho College Popcorn Forum, NIC Human Equality Club and the Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls school districts to sponsor the 13th annual fifth-grade children's program at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at NIC.

Local Activist Fondly Remembers Bono

Sonny Bono's death on a California ski hill left Hayden's Donna Montgomery dazed Tuesday. The Kootenai County Republican Women membership chairwoman was an avid supporter of Bono while working for the Southern Division of Republican Women in California. She moved to North Idaho two years ago from Southern California. "I'm so shocked and upset today I can just hardly stand it," Montgomery said. An early supporter of Bono, Montgomery said she took him seriously back when others just thought of him as "that Sonny and Cher guy."

Colleges and universities in North Idaho rang in the new year with a flurry of last-minute donations. North Idaho College and the University of Idaho reported calls and checks from 11th-hour donors this week, who helped cap a successful fund-raising year at both schools.
